Great food and friendly atmosphere - Edit
We had the 5-course surprise menu. A lot of new and special combinations of flavours. We liked it. The food looked beautiful. The restaurant looked beautiful too with a lot of earth toned colors. Really calm and friendly environment. We forgot to take pictures of all the courses.

Nice atmosphere - Edit
Food was okay, could have been more outspoken. Some dishes were a bit bland and a lot of the sauces of the savoury dishes were too sweet for my taste. Nice wine pairings, nice atmosphere and 100% vegan😄

Daarna bestelden we twee hoofdgerechten. We moesten erg lang wachten.
Good concept but needs improvement
We ate at the second fully plant-based restaurant in Haarlem. The location is great and the staff is nice, but a few are a bit awkward. The menu looks surprising. First we shared a starter of cabbage, which unfortunately was still too hard.
Then we ordered two Vegan main dishes. We had to wait very long.
The dishes are pricey for what you get and were not served well. The girl had forgotten the rice with the curry and the sauce with the noodles. The two dishes were fresh and tasty, but not enough vegetables.
There is potential in this fantastic concept, there is plenty of room for improvement. I'll be back!

Lovely food - Edit
We had a 4-course menu which lasted around 2 hours and included 4 dishes plus amuse bouche and bread and the start and chocolate truffles at the end. Every dish comprised a well thought out mix of flavours and textures which were tasty and also filling. It is also good value for the price.

I pre-ordered a gluten free menu but I got barley (a gluten grain) in one dish.

This is an example of the new world without cruelty to animals and destruction of the planet to feed ourselves. As much a possible local and fresh ingredients and as close as possible to zero waste.

Underwhelming - Edit
I don’t want to be mean but I feel like this restaurant just missed the mark, like by more then a mile.
Read moreIt started with the starter which they paired with a white wine with extreme apricot flavours, almost a dessert wine. That just missed the mark with the ingredients of the starter and dominated the dish. When I offered my feedback it was dismissed very easily and he pointed out that this was just my opinion, the table next to me stepped in and agreed with my feedback. The staff offered my another glass of wine to make up after my neighbours stepped in( which was a very nice wine, to bad they didn’t pair that one to the stater), which I appreciated.
The next dish was very cool, they paired strawberries with artichoke, unfortunately they served raw/undercooked Jeruzalem artichokes with it. Yes, I do know what a cooked one tastes like and it’s not like an hard apple. They also missed the mark again with the rose wine that took over the dish. Unfortunate!
The main dish felt like there where too many ideas that just didn’t worked together.. the mung beans with chard was under seasoned and the soy celery steak with mustard is just a hard no for me.. soy and mustard don’t go together very well… it felt chaotic and unbalanced.
then the dessert, that a dish I always look forward to but this one was just one dimensional and way WAY to sweet. As I have a sweet tooth that says a lot.. I didn’t have the strength to finish the dessert and I may have to see a dentist tomorrow..
I feel like this restaurant has a lot of potential but the execution just wasn’t there. You see the hard work and love in the ambiance of the restaurant and I do feel like the staff is passionate. They didn’t like me very much after my feedback on the wine though.. they didn’t come up to our table to ask if it was tasty either. After he took my dessert plate he just said, sweet right? And wasn’t surprised that I almost didn’t touched my dish.
I don’t know if this was just bad luck with the menu but how can you serve undercooked food, this bad wine pairing and one dimensional, unbalanced food when you have a imago like this and won an award?!
Unfortunately this just wasn’t good enough and definitely not worth the price. I won’t be eating here again… I left unsatisfied and disappointed.
Cons: Under cooked veggies, Bad wine pairing , Chaotic dishes with no balance

LOVE LOVE LOVE - Edit
Finally an upscale vegan restaurant in my hometown! Mama Gaia doesn't use 'meat substitutes' such as chicken pieces and things: veggies are the star of the dishes and the 'substitutes' they do use are homemade. The dishes are def not something I can make at home, so yeah... It's a proper fancy dinner at Mama Gaia.

Relaxed and enjoyable lunch - Edit
Had a lovely lunch on the sunny terrace. Nice spacious location, inside is also very light and spacious. In a quiet neighbourhood. Hardly any traffic.
Read moreVery friendly service.
Had some vegetable chips, smoothie, then a sandwich of the day (with tofu and eggplant).
Love that they have a nice variety of fresh drinks (lemonades, smoothies).
The filling of the sandwich was excellent. Although the vegetable chips on the side were a bit too much (and since I had already ordered some as an appetizer, waaay too much). Got a bag to take them with me.
Would definitely come back here again to try the evening menu.
Seems like a newly renovated building. Pity no accessible entrance at front (is at the back). Accessible toilet available (elevator).

I have tried Mama Gaia twice and never been fully sold. Great to have a fully vegan restaurant in town, but between the prices and service it just left me a bit unimpressed.

Cons: Apathetic staff, Take away experience not great, Not great value for money
