穗科, at 台北市忠孝東路四段216巷27弄3號, is a noodle house with a few locations. The owner learned udon making from a Japanese master. Menu is vegan friendly. Egg is used in the cold udon, and the menu specifies which items are lacto-veg and ovo-veg. Known for in-house-made udon noodle, both hot and cold. Also serves side dishes and desserts. Open Mon-Fri 11:30am-2:00pm, Mon-Sun 5:30pm-9:00pm, Sat-Sun 11:30am-3:00pm.

hoshina - Edit

since turning veggie, i've often craved for a simple bowl of ramen or udon. i can't think of anywhere in hk where i can enjoy this without having to splurge on a vegetarian kaiseki, as traditionally most japanese broth contains pork or dashi.

the menu at hoshina consists of a variety of hot/cold udon, side dishes and desserts; all extremely simple yet extremely delicious. from what i've observed, for dishes where a soft-boiled egg is normally added, staff will highlight this and you can opt for it to be excluded.

please, please, hoshina, open a branch in hk or singapore!

nb: i would list this outlet as "zhongxiao" rather than "da'an", simply because of the name of the closest mrt station.

Pros: delicious; udon made in-house, vegan-friendly staff, well-spaced tables, not too noisy

Homemade udon for vegetarians and vegans - Edit

Hoshina is really great restaurant: the udon noodles are homemade (you can even watch the guy making the udon), the taste is very good (I really love the cold ones) and the style of the restaurant is also very nice.

Pros: delicious, clean, vegan friendly udon

Cold Udon for Hot Humid Summers - Edit

The house specialty cold udon is a rare treat for Taipei's increasingly unbearable summers. The more thinly cut noodles come in a sauce that has a hint of yuzu zest and is savoury as well as refreshing. For an even more visually pleasing option, Vegetable Cold Udon is topped with finely shredded carrot, cucumber, red cabbage and lettuce.

Awesome veggie udon restaurant - Edit

How often do you come across an udon place that is completely vegetarian and make their noodles fresh in house? Well, this is certainly a first for me. Their whole menu is vegetarian with eggs and dairy clearly indicated. All side dishes are vegan. How cool is that?

Our lunch was fantastic. We ordered two hot udon and four sides. The udon broth was light and clean but flavorful; the noodles were handmade in house and got a nice chew to them. As for the sides, I'd highly recommend the black sesame tofu and the veggie-miso pancake rolls. The tofu had a creamy and custardy texture that was just lovely; the black sesame was assertive and slightly bitter, which went really well with the mildly sweet sauce. The rolls were straightforward—veggies wrapped and rolled up in a flour flatbread, smeared with a touch of miso, and cut into bite sizes. So simple, but so delicious. All this food cost only about 25 USD including 10% service charge. What an amazing value!

The location was also very good; it's super easy to get to and is right in a hip neighborhood full of independent shops and restaurants. The wooden furniture and minimalistic décor made for a peaceful and relaxing aura. The staff was knowledgable and forthcoming with suggestions. This has got to be one of my favorite dining spots in the city for casual grub thus far.

Pros: great food, good value, location
