Plant based food in a planty environment

Ok. I have to admit that I'm a bit biased here as I work at the Botanical garden. But the restaurant of the garden is managed by a separate company so I am not tooting my own horn by saying that this is a great place. I eat here often and am really happy with the varied menu that has interesting vegan options.

Pros: Food was good , Presetation creative

Cons: On busy days the service can be a bit slow.

Interesting menu but undercooked vegetables

This is a beautiful cafe with a lovely atmosphere. The menu is very creative and interesting with lots of vegetarian options, and a few vegan options. Presentation was lovely, the only downside is that the vegetables were undercooked in two of our dishes (undercooked potatoes in the roasted cauliflower salad and undercooked aubergine in the roasted aubergine sandwich). If this issue was fixed the food would be great!

Pros: Interesting menu, Lovely atmosphere

Cons: Undercooked vegetables, Would like more vegan dessert options

Groene oase in Leiden

Erg lekker. Ze verkopen speciaal Hortus bier en thee. #Veganuary

Good food and cozy vibes

There is a few vegan items (soups, sandwiches, salads). For the price the portions were large. I had the hummus and mushrooms toast and also tasted the mushrooms croquettes and everything was good. Nice location

Cozy atmosphere, lovely place

I've been to Hortus Grand Cafe quite a lot of times. Until recently they had almost no vegan options at all, but luckely that changed! My salad was nice. It could have used a dressing, cause it was a bit dry. Nevertheless it tasted good, the bread was fine as well, and this place serves plantbased milk (oat and soy). The setting is great, loads of plants. Hopefully they will add even more vegan options to their menu!

Pros: A couple of vegan options, Loads of plants, Friendly staff

Cons: A bit expensive

Mostly vegetarian menu with several vegan options

We shared a the curry cauliflower sandwich (geroosterde kerrie-bloemkool broodje) and the vegetable garden salad. Instead of the typical hummus, the cauliflower sandwich had a muhammara spread, which (we researched) is typically made of walnuts, red bell peppers, pomegranate molasses, and breadcrumbs. The sandwich also had sweet potato, spinach and pomegranate seeds. You could choose between whole wheat bread or a dark multigrain (both vegan). Both salads listed on the menu are vegan and you can add falafel for extra protein for a small cost. The vegetable garden salad (moestuin salade) was a leafy green salad covered in roasted vegetables, served with a slice of bread. We were thankful the chef included these thoughtful and unique vegan items. Both were a little on the dry side, but very tasty nonetheless. The outdoor terrace was peaceful, with both sunny and shady spots. Service was friendly.
