My honest review, 2.5 - Edit
I can see my opinion is uncommon, but I want to be honest. First off, I love a vegan Reuben! It's my absolute favourite. And maybe I was spoiled by previous vegan Reubens, but this was the worst I've ever had. The seitan 'meat' was very thick and hard, and worse, it had been marinated in a sticky, sweet, possibly BBQ style, sauce, that in no way belongs on a Reuben. It completely dominated the Russian sauce and cheese flavours, and I'm not certain there was even sauerkraut on there. For those who've never had Reubens this could be a delicious sandwich, but the dryness and sweetness might put others off. These issues, plus being at Edinburgh prices, which seem to outweigh even London prices, was very disappointing. One star for being vegan, one and a half for the service, and the food being warm and substantial.

Friendly vegan cafe serving a mix of sandwiches, all day breakfast and cakes and coffee. I had the Ruben’s sandwich which was really tasty and a piece of caramel sponge cake and coffee

Delicious - Edit
We had the “seitan pastrami” sandwich and the jackfruit burger, both so delicious! The cakes and coffee were not so great, though.

Nice to not have to worry about options! I had a root veg and chickpea grain salad bowl with oregano chips followed by lemon cake. I had a roobios tea and a frappucino. Not particularly cheap but so worth it!

Visit by Bob the Green Druid - Edit
The meal was lovely I had pulled Jack Fruit burger and chips along with a Roobus tea, staff were pleasent, we'd been able to book during Fringe was excellent. Menu totally vegan, we'd arrived at 1pm and the place was busy, our meals were ready after an half hour wait which we'd be warned about. Would highly recommend it. Access problems due to the steps was the only issue.

Solid vegan breakfast - Edit
My partner and I both got full vegan breakfasts and were largely happy with the dish. Not everything was perfect it it was tasty overall.
Read moreTofu scramble: lacked a bit of seasoning, and would've benefited from a some black salt. It felt a bit heavy with turmeric and was a bit claggy.
Italian Sausage: this was a really nice meaty sausage. Not sure what the Italian aspect was though, we didn't notice any Italian herbs.
Tempeh bacon: nice flavour but the texture wasn't perfect. It was a bit soft and needed more crisping on the edges.
Potato scones: crispy and tasty like a fried potato pancake, this was delicious.
Mushrooms: nicely cooked, juicy, but needed a lick more salt for us (there was salt, pepper, and ketchup on the table).
Toast: lovely bread, but one serving was extremely under toasted (one side out of four). It came with a generous serving of spread.
Tomatoes: a couple of cherry tomatoes, they'd been kissed by the grill at least but could definitely have done with some more cooking.
Beans: seemed like regular tinned beans. They were fine without being anything special.
Rocket: salad does not belong on a full vegan breakfast plate!

Amazing food! - Edit
I had the Reuben sandwich and hot chocolate then ordered 3 of their cakes to go since they looked so good! I had the tiramisu cake, double chocolate cake, and red velvet cake. I loved that the Reuben was served on fresh sourdough bread (my favorite bread) and all the cakes were heavenly! It was great that they’re open later until 10 pm so you a grab a bite to eat later if you’re hungry. The staff was also very friendly!

Good food with many clear gluten free options! I had the No-Mackrell open toasty. It was good but too salty and a bit sickely. Still delicious though, but would try something else next time😄

Really delicious food - Edit
I came on a rainy day with a bit of a cold feeling sorry for myself, and Holy Cow cheered me right up. I had a big breakfast, hot chocolate and some cake and it was all excellent. The cafe itself was in such a cool, below street level building and it was such a cosy way to hole up against bad weather for a few hours.

Wonderful cafe in central Edinburgh. It isn't a huge place but as well as the indoor seating there's an outdoor patio area at the back. - Edit
