No longer open

This place was great while it lasted, however during the pandemic (even while Ava's, the store it operated inside of remained open to shoppers), it closed. I asked an Ava's employee if Hey-O was coming back and they said no.

Hidden Vegan Jewell

Tucked away little restaurant in grocery store, the food is delicious with dishes you can't find elsewhere.

Hidden gem—and they serve weekend brunch!

Note: you can order sandwiches on greens or on rice

This restaurant is hidden in Ava's grocery and offers delicious vegan lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. They also have great beverages, including a nice selection of beers on tap.

I was eating regularly at Scratch nearby and when I tried switching to vegan fare, I could only order very few things—and no brunch 😓.

HeyO! has sort of become my regular place recently and I find it to be a great substitute for Scratch for everything except cocktails. The cafe area is more down to earth (Scratch is a bit bourgie), the staff is smaller and hence even easier to get to know, and the food is almost as delicious at half the price (Scratch is spendy). Oh, and HeyO!'s vegan!! 😁

And Scratch is just 100-200 feet away so you could always have Scratch cocktails (probably vegan) and HeyO! food 🙂

Pros: Great prices, Great options, Friendly staff

Cons: Café style in grocery store (also a pro sometimes), Bit cool in cold months, Sandwiches have lots of bread (can sub greens)

Sinfully vegan

Vegans and non-vegans alike will love this place. Their food is vegan guilty pleasure food. So delicious and sinful. I especially loved their Fried and Gone to Heaven fries which is like an Animal-style fries from In and Out. We also got the Thai Chili Baller sandwich, The World is my Oyster...On Shrooms and This Chick Stood Me Up. We all enjoyed our meal and would definitely dine there again. I love the clever names and the big flavor profile. I am knocking one star off, however, cause the price per item is a bit high. That said, I am happy to support this vegan establishment and am extremely grateful for more vegan options in my area.

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Price

Complex Flavors

*Our favorite was the Thai Sandwich 🇹🇭, then the Po Boy and Buffalo Cauliflower (Spicy) 🐃 were our second favorite. We really enjoy the complex flavors.
The Roasted Veggie Fall Sandwich was okay and I didn't really care for the Roasted Chickpea Sandwich.

We were excited to try this place based on the reviews.

Parking (free): We drove around the block and parked directly behind Ava's in the CVS parking garage. From there we walked toward Ava's. There is a sign at the back entrance of Ava's stating to not use the back entrance so we followed a path to the front, turned left when we met the sidewalk. We ended up directly in front of the building.

There is also parking directly in front of Ava's. I believe it is metered as it is regular street parking. It was quite busy when we arrived (dinner time) and there was no street parking available anywhere.

$13.00 Thai Sandwich: This was our favorite. The sauce was delicious. The glaze on the 'meatball' was really good. The 'meatball' was chickpea based, it tasted mostly like thyme which wasn't my favorite. The bread was super fresh and delicious this time. Definitely give this a try.

$13.00 Buffalo Cauliflower: This was pretty good. It was a bit spicy but overall a really good sandwich also.

$14.00 Po Boy: Seemed a bit pricey and we would have expected a side for this price. It does seem to be in an expensive area.

We loved the breading on the oyster mushrooms, it was perfect. The mushrooms themselves were extremely rubbery. I couldn't even chew them, I had to pretty much swallow them whole. The onions on top were okay. We did order a bit ahead so hopefully that was the issue. Or perhaps they just accidentally overcooked the mushrooms this time.

The pesto aoli was fine, just not to my liking or a flavor I would expect on a Po Boy. I would have preferred a cajun aoli or regular vegan mayo. But that's just me.

The bread itself was nice also but a bit dry and flakey. I really liked that it was like a roll where you could tear apart the sandwich into smaller pieces. Really great idea.

Decent portion size. We shared but weren't quite satisfied.

Ice cream sandwich: I think this was $6-8 but don't remember (our total was around $22). This was a bit of a splurge on a hot day. The vegan ice cream was ok. The cookie part was not very good. It was chalky.

Seating: small area at the bar inside at the stall and several tables inside or a small outdoor seating area with tables near the road.

Pros: High quality food

Cons: Parking , Expensive

Best implementation of vegan

This is the best implementation of a Vegan restaurant I have been to. It's inside a super market, so the place is not very restauranty, but it's good and clean enough. The food is good quality and delicious. There are healthy options available. Even if you are a new vegan or just experimenting, you won't miss meat. I hope they grow fast into a more popular restaurant.

Pros: Everything is vegan, Food is fresh and delicious , Healthy options available

Cons: May be they can get a better place

A Hidden Gem

This gem is hidden (though easy to find) inside Ava’s Market along Castro Street. Walk into the market and look right—it’s in the open yet a comfortable, casual place to sit and have a meal with friends or family. We ordered 3 dishes, Kampuchea from the tap, and some truffle balls. Every single item bursted with flavors. The menu has a good range of options and the chef mentioned he experiments and adds new dishes regularly.

My wife and I have been vegans for a long time, but our 8-yo daughter (although she eats entirely vegan at home) still eats fish when we go out for meals; however, this seems to be a cafe that she will enthusiastically eat 100% vegan when we go out.

What a lucky find in downtown Mountain View, for vegans and non-vegans. Hey-O is a great option for us, and it just climbed to the top of our list of options. Highly and confidently recommended.

Fun and fabulous!

Don’t let the location inside the grocery store dissuade you. This place rocks! Fun vibe and creative and delicious food abound. We tried the beer cheese with pretzel sticks (nice for snack or appetizer), the grilled cauliflower ceviche with tortilla chips (fresh and instantly addictive), vegetable pad Thai (a wonderful, spiralized, raw take on the classic dish), the roasted mushroom sandwich (decadent and delicious), and my favorite, the Bowl Down to the Queen (roasted veggie and quinoa bowl with a killer avocado sauce). We also took home a jar of mixed beans and corn salad that made for some amazing wraps the next day. Sandwiches seem like a big seller and no wonder since they are served on top of fresh baked split top rolls (and therefore are eaten with a fork). And don’t forget the scrumptious chocolate chip cookies, gorgeous truffles and cupcakes! The store is in the middle of a fun, bustling neighborhood of shops and restaurants and parking is free in a lot nearby. The restaurant. has some outdoor dining tables and a casual indoor space. You can do your grocery shopping without leaving the building after your meal! We are already planning our next visit!

Jury still out

On the expensive side, the food was good. Biscuit and grabber was tasty and hearty. The tofu scramble was a bit bland and small. Hoping they spice it up and add more herbs to get better taste

Pros: All vegan, Brunch!

Cons: Expensive, Some items bland, give time to work out details

Perfect for the vegan sweet tooth-ers too!

We came to HeyO on the first day they opened and several times since, and not only we enjoy their food and their wonderful Igzu Bamboo Leaf Tea, we are hooked on their desserts - cupcakes, cake pops, bread-pudding muffins, brownies, chocolate chip cookies... you should see our faces when their dessert section is sold out... or better, when it is not!
I wish you will have a big sign outside AVA to direct people in, but word of mouth will keep customers coming I am sure.
Thank you HeyO lovely people for coming to Downtown Mountain View!

HeyO! Eats -- yes, please!

Nice little storefront in downtown Mountainview. Just step into Ava's Market and turn right to see it a few footsteps away.

My wife and I shared a "Fried and Gone to Heaven." See pics for the thousand words, but suffice it to say they were sooo delicious!

I should also mention that they make 99% of their food without resorting to fake meats. Now keep in mind that I'm still a fan of vegan fake meat, but what they do here with mushrooms, etc. will satiate you just the same.

I also ordered the "The World is My Oyster ... on Shrooms" -- awesome! Southern style deep fried oyster mushrooms in a flaky roll sandwich with grilled onions, drizzled with their nummy "lemon pesto heyoli." Enough said, eh?

My wife ordered the "Cha Cha Chimi My Shrooms." See pic of menu for details. To be sure, I am looking forward to trying it when we get home.

For now ... kind of filled myself up on fries. >_

Pros: Best fries ... eva!, Love the southern deep fried oyster mushrooms!, Fresh, flaky buns!

Cons: Can't try everything at the same time. >_

Thank you Happy Cow!

We would have never found this place if it weren’t for this app. After walking the ENTIRE Mountain View “Strip” and finding nada in terms of veg friendly healthy food that wasn’t Indian food we were about to get in the car and leave. But I pulled up the Happy Cow app and voila! Hey-O popped up. The staff is super helpful and there are so many options of healthy and “cheat” options that it took us a few minutes to decide on what to get. We chose from the lunch menu and everything was bomb. Side note- they have Kombucha on tap which is always a plus! I hope this place survives. We will def be back. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Pros: It’s ALL VEGAN, It’s not Tofu , Food options are MODERN and healthy

Cons: Hard to find

Good if you're in the neighbourhood

Excited to try this place but it was a little tricky to find located inside Ava's Downtown Market. Definitely enjoyed the loaded fries 'Fried and gone to heaven.' Disappointed by the 'Veg out in the buff' - just cauliflower covered in buffalo sauce, felt like it could have been better. We really enjoyed their 'Thai Chilli Baller' - delicious!
Always great finding a vegan place where you can order anything off the menu. The bread they used in the sandwiches was yummy and easy to divide and share.
A good place for a casual lunch but given the price and out of the way location (for us) we probably won't visit often.

Pros: All vegan, Fresh tasting, Great bread

Cons: Difficult to find, located in Ava's market, Pricey

Hey Yo Should Eat Here

The GINGER THAI VEG BALLS are amazeballs. The FRIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN was my boyfriend's favorite and I had a hard time not taking it away from him after he let me taste it. The VEGETABLE PAD THAI was fresh, flavorful, and freakin' fantastic. Whether you're vegan, or not, your taste buds will be pleased. All of the sauces and dressing are home-made. Very nice selection of beer on tap. The place is clean and the vibe is good. We will indubitably return again very soon. So happy that we found it!

Pros: Excellent Food , Friendly staff, Fast Service

Cons: Parking can be a challenge, No outside signage, but they're working on that

Great Food

The salads were generous and was really great to find a vegan place with a focus on fresh, local produce. I love vegan junk food as much as the next guy, but this was a good reminder of how tasty healthy and well prepared vegan food can be. Owners were very nice and accommodating.

It’s inside Ava’s market, so the ambiance leaves something to be desired, especially at this price point ($10 apps and $13-14 mains) but if you are used to seeking out solid vegan eats in unlikely places you’ll be familiar with the setup and appreciative of the food. Would definitely return!

Pros: Healthy and locally focused, Generous portions, Delicious

Cons: Atmosphere, A little pricey
