More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:

Ethical and environmental reasons, first and foremost. I can't tolerate killing for food when it's not necessary. I also hate the environmental impact that industrial animal production has on the world. Secondly is taste. Vegan food tastes better than anything else. Third, I guess I grew up heavily with vegan food, though I didn't become vegan until I was 21 (became vegetarian at 20). It's part of my background and makes my life more interesting and fun.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:

This is the most discerning and easy-to-use site for finding good restaurants. I travel a fair amount and this site is invaluable to me. I also love to write reviews and keep the site up-to-date so that it continues to be a thriving, vibrant resource for the growing number of veg*ns in the US and the growing number of veg*n restaurants, too!

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:

I love Brazil and Thailand and while India is challenging, it's also a wild trip with so many delights and treasures, cultural, historical and gastronomical. I also love Chicago (my hometown) and vast swaths of the Midwest. Since moving to Minnesota last year, I've come to realize how progressive, smart, clean, friendly and cutting-edge both the state and the Twin Cities are. I ride my bike to work and Minneapolis is second only to Portland, OR in terms of veg*n-friendly restaurants per capita. I'd like to visit Africa and more of Latin America someday.

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:

Thai food is always awesome. I also love all types of Indian foods. I often crave Mexican food and hope more Mexican restaurants will embrace veggie meats and seitan as substitutes in their dishes. As far as individual ingredients go, I love tofu, broccoli, seitan, mushrooms, tea, lentils, brown rice, avocado and bell peppers.

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:

Books: Hiroshima by John Hersey; Siddhartha by Herman Hesse; All the Names by Jose Saramago; The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway....I could name dozens, just ask (I was a literature major in college). Movies: The Fog of War, Almost Famous, City of God, Amores Perros, The Straight Story, The Thin Red Line, Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead TV Shows: The Wire, Deadwood, Freaks and Geeks, Futurama, 30 Rock

For my brother I am reaching out to you. He just moved to San Francisco and became totally vegetarian, alcohol free and Yoga/Meditation type a month back after spending a month in Ashram in India. He is at 839 Leavenworth St, San Francisco, CA 94109. He is busy intern for a Investment Bank at 135 Main. If you have any friend or you yourself can guide him about cooking tasty veg food or guide him about local veg restaurant.
