Lovely, home style Shojin ryori meal - Edit
Part of a guest house. Must book at least 24 hours in advance. 3000yen for a set meal. Around 5-6 dishes seasonal based. Vege or vegan options. Note that meal was partly ready on arrival so don't be late!

shojin ryori vegan meal - Edit
The chef is a vegetarian, a buddist, and i thinkbthe cooking is in the shojin ryori tradition. Many dishes - like a degustation - absolutely delicious, one if the best meals I’ve had anywhere.

Ryokan - Edit

Traditional Ryokan in Nozawa Onsen - Edit
We stayed at this wonderful Japanese-style lodging in Nozawa Onsen for Christmas. The room was clean, warm and cozy, and the hosts made sure we had hot water at all times. They gave us detailed information about everything there was to do in the area. There were so many wonderful free hot springs very close by!
Read moreWe requested vegan food for dinner and breakfast in advance, and although a bit too oily for my personal preference, it was delicious and prepared with utmost care! At that time it was only possible to dine there if you had also booked the ryokan for the night, but I believe that before the pandemic, you could also just go there for a meal.
I can't imagine us staying anywhere else next time we come back to Nozawa Onsen!

Wonderful Set Dinner - Edit
Set dinner in the Japanese Kaiseki style, beautifully presented and using local ingredients. Reserve the day prior and specify if you want the vegan option. The best meal we had at Nozawaonsen by far. The non-vegetarians in the group were more than satisfied.

My happy place - Edit
My husband (vegetarian) and I (vegan) had a delicious meal here - I highly recommend it! You need to book 1 day in advance (we just popped in the evening before) and tell her if you are vegetarian or vegan when booking so she can prepare it for you before you arrive. There is no menu, you are just served 8-10 delicious and interesting little Japanese dishes. Such a fab place - check it out!

Worth visiting the area just to stay and eat here. - Edit
My wife and I were looking to explore some onsen towns in the Nagano area. I found this place and we immediately booked it and ordered dinner and breakfast. The stay was lovely and the meals (especially dinner) were unbelievable. The variety and quantity blew us away. Would definitely come back.

Fantastic food, a wonderful experience - Edit
We stayed at this hotel (it is both a hotel and a restaurant) for four nights and the booking included breakfast, and you could request to eat dinner there too (with 24 hours notice). The breakfasts were very good, a mixture of Japanese and Western (but still with a Japanese twist!) items - many different small dishes to try! It is the same with dinner, there were at least 9 dishes in front of you, each one different and lovingly made. Fresh and interesting and wholesome foods. We felt so well while we were staying there, the food seemed to do us wonders! Also the lady who owns the place and does the cooking (I assume) is truly the loveliest person. There isn't a lot of English spoken but she understands and speaks enough for everyone to get by. She is very open to making the food vegan if you let her know in advance. There are pictures and figurines of all sorts of animals dotted around the place - she clearly loves animals. We loved staying there and if I ever go back I would stay there again without hesitation! And if I couldn't stay there for whatever reason, I would eat there every night!

Amazing - Edit
We had an amazing kaiseki meal here. Completely vegan. Everything was beautifully presented and we felt totally pampered. Must make reservations a day in advance.
