Ramen with Chinese taste

Saw this on happycow and had been wanting to give it a try. Was in the area this week and stopped by with friends. Here's my Gokoku Vegetarian Ramen Shop review. We got a few dishes to share: the Mayu spicy ramen, the curry ramen, and a bibimbap with sauce on the side. The Mayu one had good flavor. The curry ramen was too salty. The bibimbap is served with cold toppings but the sauce is warm and tasted okay though a bit bland. Overall, we all though the meal was okay. I would be curious to try the other dishes from the specials board next time. I would order the Mayu ramen again but not the other two.

Pros: comfortable little place

Cons: curry ramen too salty

All vegan ramen

This place is misleading because it’s called “vegetarian ramen,” but the waiter confirmed everything on the menu is vegan. It’s a super small place and the service was so-so, but the ramen was delicious. The best things we tried were the jalapeño ramen and the dry stir fry udon noodles. The broth had great flavor with charred jalapeños in it. The curry was fine, not my favorite. The extra spicy udon was also okay, just not as flavorful as the jalapeño ramen. They also have lots of sushi options, so I will definitely be back.

Pros: All vegan, Lots of options

Cons: Service was so-so, Small space

The sushi rolls are good…

I have been meaning to try this place for a while now. I have to say that the sushi rolls were very good. I recommend the spicy tuna roll and the popcorn vegan roll. I wasn’t too impressed by the ramen. I had the Beyond Ramen which was decent, but I have had better ramen at other places. The menu is extensive, so I would definitely come back to try some of their rice dishes.

Pros: Good sushi rolls, Clean restaurant space

Cons: Had to find street parking

Everything is amazing

The crunchy shrimp roll and the heart attack appetizer are absolutely delicious. We ordered so much food so that we could take some home. This is now our go to restaurant in LA!

Pros: Vegan seafood, Build your own ramen, Good service

Gokoku is Worth the Visit!

Whether dine in or take out, the food is always flavorful. The fried cauliflower is one of my favorites. Vegan sushi isn’t my thing, but from what I’ve tried here, it does deceive you to almost tasting like real fish. This place is known for their ramen, dine in for it when you get a chance. Did take out but their food is way better fresh and while it’s still warm.

Pros: Flavorful, Great portions/filling

Cons: Crispy rice rolls were not crispy

Ramen and definitely sushi

I was craving sushi and surprised by how impressive the veg sushi selection is at this ramen place. Everything I ordered (and it was a lot) was very good! I tried three rolls, the bao, and some broccoli and it was all amazing.

I admit I did not try the ramen, but if I can stop myself from just ordering a bunch of sushi again, I intend to try that next time. Don’t sleep on their sushi!

Pros: Sushi, Sushi, And more sushi

Food was okay

The food was okay. The soup was a little salty and the eggplant dishy was greasy. I loved the sushi. Might go back to this place just for sushi rolls.
Service was great and no complaints on the ambience.

Pros: Sushi rolls

Cons: Soup was salty, Eggplant dish was greasy

One of the best in LA

With so many vegan/veggie places opening in LA, this still stands out as one of the best. One of the most varied and creative menus for Asian food lovers. It’s overwhelming every time we visit, and we always end up too full!

Downside: would like to see less fried sushi rolls

Cons: Awkward bathroom , No ventilation (you smell like garlic afterwards)

food BOMB but service/cleanliness bad

ok this place has bomb ass sushi and ramen. one of my fave spots BUT everytime i’ve gone, the dishes you get still have like a crust on them or the service is like exasperated that you ask them to wipe the table down. like ok… i would just order takeout but they use like all plastic and i’d rather use so much trash.

Pros: FOOD

Cons: service, cleanliness

Gokuku is one of a kind

Beyond Ramen is insane! I had to pace myself. The broth is so delicious. The bowl is packed with fresh vegetables, beyond meat and tender noodles. Just too good. A must try.

Gokoku Vegetarian Ramen Shop

Eating here was a great experience. The food was delicious and they are actually all vegan, I think, except for an egg that you have to special request for the ramen soups.

Hardy yummy vegan food

I really liked the consistency of the ramen and the ramen noodles. The staff was really nice also. My partner wasn’t as impressed but I’ll definitely be trying it again. The crispy rice vegan spicy tuna was pretty good. I picked fan favorites to be safe.

Pros: All vegan

Cons: A little over salty but still good

So Much Flavor and Texture!!!

I love sushi, but I'm always left wanting, comparing my simple and boring (avocado roll, cucumber roll, etc.) sushi to everything else on the menu that is creative, sauced, and sometimes even tempura fried. Gokoku's tempura California roll made my mouth so happy that I didn't want to drink anything for hours after my meal. It was full of flavor and warmth! Since everything is vegan, it was a pleasure to know I could order anything -- and they had quite a variety. My husband ordered the spicy udon ramen and, although it was super spicy (and we like spicy), the flavor was spot on. We also shared a spicy tofu appetizer, which was perfect in every way.

Pros: The food was full of flavor and creative menu, Pre-COVID prices, which is rare to find in LA, Small, but cute space

Cons: Wish they had beer

Vegan shrimp tempura roll was phenomenal!

So many options! Super loved my roll. Got the mushroom ramen. Broth was really good, but it wasn’t my favorite ramen. I will definitely go back for the sushi though.

A destination restaurant

This is my go to ramen spot. Wood Ear mushrooms come standard and therefore it is #1 in my heart stomach. The sushi is also bananas!! Super cute, fun, casual vibe. Come hungry. Come with friends so you can order too much and share everything. The chef owner is super inspiring with her fitness and bodybuilding journey and makes some of the best comfort food in the city.

Pros: Huge menu, Great quality for price, Fun vibe

Cons: Small, not a lot of seating, Sushi is mock meat heavy

Tasty spicy ramen

It’s so hard to find good vegan ramen.
I had the Tantan Men, which had a rich, spicy broth. I couldn’t find any of the supposed spicy miso tofu, but it was delicious anyway. I was surprised to find the restaurant almost completely empty during a weekday lunch hour.

Ramen/sushi

I was happy to try this place. Sushi was good. Ramen was extremely salty(level 12) where I didn't want to have the liquid. Service was ok, though she had to go back to the boss and to answer my simple questions.

Cons: Park on street no lot

Heathy, entirely meatless sushi and ramen dishes. The ramen bowls are large. Portions are generous. The sushi is delicious. You won't leave feeling hungry.

Vegan sushi?! Hell yeah!

I’ve never had better vegan sushi in my life. After having gone vegan 2 years ago, I found myself lusting for some really good sushi. Well, I sure as hell found it. The food is so good and, while expensive, absolutely worth every penny!

100% go here and eat up! It’s so good

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Delivery within a short radius, Non-vegan options aplenty

Cons: Orders can take a long time when they’re busy

Huge portions!

Got the Popcorn chicken roll, dynamite roll and beyond meat Raman.

Literally a whole dish of vegan popcorn chicken on top of sushi rolls with v.crab and cucumbers in it. Very good texture between crunch chicken, cucumber, chewy rice and nori, great balance of flavor as well considering all the sauces on it.

Beyond meat ramen, it’s like a teriyaki sou sauce broth reman. Noodles texture was chewy to my liking, lots of fresh veggies. If you like beyond meat you will like this.

Dynamite roll, have to wait 20mins for it (said on the menu). It has popcorn v. Shrimps on top of sushi roll with cucumber and avocado. It was a little too messy and too many flavors for me with all the sauces and toppings. The v.crab meat and v.spicy tuna as a topping piled on top of the sushi roll was too much. The roll was a little too sweet as well from the eel sauce.

Food portion bigger then we expect 🥰 still ate everything.

Very good Crazy Spicy Udon

I enjoyed the Crazy Spicy Udon Noodle and the crunchy spicy tuna roll. The udon was spicy and filling the tuna roll was good (if not as “crunchy” as it should be). A good find!

Pros: Several vegan options

Cons: Not a lot of seating, Can get busy
