Inexpensive bento restaurant - Edit
On a whim, I stopped by this little bento specialty restaurant next to the Shuanglian Morning Market one day for some breakfast. The staff asked if I planned to dine in or order take out. After telling him I wanted to dine in, he handed me a rectangular plate and a pair of tongs to load it up with whatever dishes I wanted. I asked him to confirm whether any of them contained dairy or eggs, and the only non-vegan item they serve is fried eggs, which are kept behind the staff, completely separate from the other dishes out front. I happily snagged a wide variety of different whole plant dishes and some tofu items (NT$75). Then he offered a bowl of rice, either flat on top (NT$10) or a rounded mound of it (NT$15) in a rice bowl. I could also choose from three kinds of rice, of which I went with the small, five-grain option. I sat down with my nutritious, not too oily or salty breakfast at a table inside, grabbed a pair of metal chopsticks, and dug in. Extremely happy to have found this place and am adding it to my regular spots.

The staff was so sweet: before I sat down, he noticed that I had a bag of prescription medicine from the nearby hospital tucked under one arm and was scrambling to find a plastic bag for me to put it in, but I told him I didn't need one. Then before I left, it had started drizzling. I didn't have an umbrella with me, and he offered one of their "love umbrellas" (愛心傘). I graciously declined since it wasn't raining heavily, but I appreciated the kind gestures very much.
