Best vegan food in Hampton Roads - Edit
This is by far the best vegan food in the 757. You must try the lentil burger, crab cakes, rasta pasta with jerk mushrooms and any of their fantastic specials! I cannot come to VA and not visit Desmond’s.

I had the Jerk Mushrooms with Mac/cheese, callaloo, banana pudding and ginger lemonade. Everything was delicious, I was really surprised how good the Mac and cheese turned out. I typically don’t like vegan cheeses. This mac had a nice thick and creamy consistency to it.

Okay vegan food - Edit
Ordered online, waited over an hour for pasta and a side of chow mein. Cost $22 with tip for a small container of noddles and pasta. Portion was good but flavor was just okay. She had to make the noodles and seemed to want me to say I changed my mind and didn’t want to wait. Told me that it would be 10 minutes but it was 40 minutes plus the 30 minutes from when I placed the original order. I can’t give less than 2 stars but they definitely don’t deserve more than 1 star.

Such a great vegan restaurant in Virginia Beach. The staff was very courteous and helpful with my order. We order two different curry’s (pumpkin and eggplant) both were fantastic. The lentil meatballs were to die for, such a treat.

This was a real surprise, sitting there in a strip mall next to a barber shop. Cute patio though and nice to eat outside ~ and My Oh My what goodness they bring. I had the barbecue sandwich -- nicely spicy with cool coleslaw on top. My friend had the eggplant curry and it was WOW good ~ so perfectly spiced. Collard greens cooked to perfection; pumpkin side was soft and delicious. Everything good. They were out of vegan Mac so you know I'm going back.

Take out only as of 6/30/20 due to covid19. There are a few tables out front where you can eat after ordering. Food was EXCELLENT. The lentil empanadas were delicious.

Read moreI visited Desmond's for dinner for the first time with my sister. Going off past Yelp reviews, we assumed that it was a non-veg place (for her) with veg options (for me), and were surprised to discover that it had gone full vegan. The outside of the store didn't wow me, but the warm lights and natural decorations of the interior made it feel welcoming.
After a few more minutes browsing the menu, we ordered our food. The entrees come with two sides; my sister ordered the ox-tail mushrooms with mac & cheese and jasmine rice and I ordered the guava-glazed lentilballs with mac & cheese and plantains.
The entrees: My sister says the oxtail-style mushrooms were surprisingly hearty. They had a good bite of spice in a stew-like sauce with beans. My order of lentilballs came with seven pieces, of which I only ate two because I was so full from the mac & cheese and plantains. They were sticky from the guava-glaze and pleasantly chewy. I look forward to reheating them for lunch!
The sides: The jasmine rice was well-cooked and delicately seasoned. The plantains had a good crisp outside and a sweet softness inside. The mac & cheese was standout; we each received two generous scoops with our meals. It was creamy with a curry spin.
We didn't try them, but if you want dessert after Desmond's has a basket of wrapped vegan cookies and cups of pudding near the front counter.
Environmental note: We paid our bill on a small electronic device and received the receipt through email, so no there was no need to use paper! Also, Desmond's has instituted a policy of giving straws only when requested, which is a fantastic idea. If you take food home, the servers give you paper containers. (I brought containers from home for our leftovers.)
I love the conscious steps they're taking to reduce waste.

We had jerk BBQ jackfruit sandwich with plantains and throughly enjoyed it. All the staff were really friendly. About 15 people also eating there during lunchtime on Saturday. Check it out if you’re craving this kind of food.

Food was delicious! I had the lunch special krabcake with yellow rice, collards, and plantains. My friend has the BBQ jackfruit sandwich. I’ve had vegan soul food in other cities, and this is some of THE BEST I’ve had. Island punch and chai latte were also very good. They just renovated the space, so it’s a perfect lunch or early dinner spot. Can’t wait to go back.
