Honey

Glen makes vegan coconut ice cream from his home in Hana and sells to local retailers, including Maui Mike's in Lahaina. Sometimes sells from his ice cream van on the road to Hana. NOTE: June '23, reported that many options contain honey/bee pollen, check carefully when ordering. Open Mon-Sun 10:30am-5:30pm.

Nice stop on Road to Hana

We stopped here for a snack, as food options are pretty limited in this area. Lots of flavours, and you can mix two in each cup. Coconut and salted caramel were both delicious! Not good for someone with a nut allergy as some flavours have nuts.

Pros: Wide variety of flavours, Cute roadside food stand

Cons: Expensive, Only one size available

Tasty Ice Cream on a Road with Limited Options

I was so glad to see the signs to this place as we made the long journey to Hāna. With so few options for dessert on this road, this was like an oasis in the desert.

We had the original coconut, coffee toffee and “mystery flavor” which was a chocolate chocolate chip. The flavors were delicious, but the texture was more icy vs. creamy. Still, I’m grateful that this place even exists.

They even had a vegan banana bread available when we were there. Now that was a treasure to find giving all the non-vegan banana bread around the island. Haven’t tried it yet, but again, grateful that it exists.

I wish I had read the Happy Cow reviews first because I didn’t realize that I needed to ask about honey/bee pollen. I’ll keep that in mind for next time.

Pros: Delicious flavors, Great Road to Hāna stop

Cons: A little expensive, but that’s Hawaii, Not really completely vegan

Worth stopping at

If you’ve had good vegan ice cream, this will not blow your mind. The ginger lemongrass flavor was very good. There’s a really old, cute, tiny dog and some cats.

Cons: Honey maca nut is not vegan

Cute place, good place to stop on the drive to Hana

Not great ice cream imo but I appreciate that they are there. The mango had the most pronounced flavour was the best imo (we tried all the flavours). Good place to get out and stretch your legs and take a break in the long road to Hana.

Fresh ice cream

While researching the road to Hana, I could not wait to visit Coconut Glen's due to all the rave reviews.

Honestly, the ice cream itself was a little underwhelming but it was still good. Lots of ice chunks but it might have been an off day for us. Loved to see that there were so many flavor options, and that they could make floats or an affogato.

All the ice cream is naturally made in-house, but this place unfortunately isn't 100% vegan as they use honey and bee pollen in some of their products. Definitely ask ahead before ordering (I wouldn't have known this if it weren't for happycow reviews).

Adorable spot on the side of the road. The cats roaming around were all so sweet and friendly.

Cons: Honey, bee pollen

Good vegan ice cream made from fresh coconut

Quaint little outdoor pit stop along the road to Hana. Friendly service. Tried three flavors: coffee toffee, mint chip, and cookies ‘n cream. Texture was similar to that of an icey (rather than creamy ice cream) and was a bit pricy for the serving size (2 small scoops for $8). But all flavors were tasty overall! Very cool to know it’s made from fresh coconuts (which are also sold at the truck).

Overrated and Underwhelming

The ice cream was underwhelming, far from the standard Maui gelato has set. Despite glowing Google reviews, it didn’t deliver.

The coconut flavor had chunks that added texture and flavor, but the pineapple banana was bland, lacking both pineapple and banana flavor.

The orange cats were definitely the highlight of this stop!

The ice creams, cookies, root beer floats are all vegan. The other baked goods are not. Fresh pineapple and coconut also available.

Delicious hand made ice cream

Must visit on the Road to Hana. Handmade ice cream made me nostalgic of some ice cream I used to eat in India before I turned vegan. #Veganuary

Must stop on your way to Hana 💚

Love the vibe and the fact that it is a fully vegan ice cream place on the road to Hana in Maui.. where everything is inaccessible. Such a refreshing treat on a vigorous drive. Loved the natural flavours of coconut and pineapple ice cream. I was experiencing some motion sickness on this trip and the ice creams just energized me. Definitely visit Coconut Glen's ice cream on your way to Hana 💚 #Veganuary

Pros: Natural Flavors, Vegan ice cream where everything is inaccessible, Nice pit stop on a difficult road trip #Veganuary

Leave the Bee's Alone Glen

Leaving the hive, a foraging bee collects sugar-rich flower nectar, sucking it through its proboscis and placing it in its proventriculus (honey stomach or crop), which lies just dorsal to its food stomach. The honey stomach holds about 40 mg of nectar, or roughly 50% of the bee's unloaded weight, which can require over a thousand flowers and more than an hour to fill. The nectar generally begins with a water content of 70 to 80%. Salivary enzymes and proteins from the bee's hypopharyngeal gland are added to the nectar to begin breaking down the sugars, raising the water content slightly. The forager bees then return to the hive, where they regurgitate and transfer nectar to the hive bees. The hive bees then use their honey stomachs to ingest and regurgitate the nectar, forming bubbles between their mandibles repeatedly until it is partially digested. The bubbles create a large surface area per volume and a portion of the water is removed through evaporation. Bee digestive enzymes hydrolyze sucrose to a mixture of glucose and fructose, and break down other starches and proteins, increasing the acidity.

The bees work together as a group with the regurgitation and digestion for as long as 20 minutes, passing the nectar from one bee to the next, until the product reaches the honeycombs in storage quality. It is then placed in honeycomb cells and left unsealed while still high in water content (about 50 to 70%) and natural yeasts which, unchecked, would cause the sugars in the newly formed honey to ferment. Bees are among the few insects that can generate large amounts of body heat, and the hive bees constantly regulate the hive temperature, either heating with their bodies or cooling with water evaporation, to maintain a fairly constant temperature of about 35 °C (95 °F) in the honey-storage areas. The process continues as hive bees flutter their wings constantly to circulate air and evaporate water from the honey to a content around 18%, raising the sugar concentration beyond the saturation point and preventing fermentation. The bees then cap the cells with wax to seal them.

The bees then call out to hungry human capitalists saying, "please steal the products of our labor for your financial gain."

Just kidding. Leave the bees alone Glen.

Pros: Isn't exploiting Bovines.

Cons: Exploits Apis instead.

Honey and bee pollen aren't vegan

It's misleading to advertise all the ice creams as vegan and call yourself a vegan business, but not mention that honey is in some of the flavors, as well as bee pollen. It's disappointing to not be told that you're eating animal products. I feel sad now.

The Golden Cream (turmeric) flavor contains honey, and Immunity Blast (Lilikoi) flavor contains honey and bee pollen.

Don’t miss this on way to Hana

This was one stop we *had* to make on the Hana circle. There were five or six flavors; we had chocolate chili and lilikoi. They were delicious and I heard comments from others there about how good the coconut flavor was. It was very expensive though so figured it was part of the cost of the whole Hana trip experience.

Perfect Pitstop

This was an awesome surprise as we were driving down the Road to Hana! You have to get the coconut flavor!! I got the chocolate as well since you get to pick 2 which was also good but can’t beat the coconut. It is a bit expensive but its Maui 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lovely surprise!

We didn’t see this place on happy cow but stumbled upon it while doing the Shaka Guide’s Reserve Road to Hana tour. So glad he mentioned it, otherwise we would have never known it was all vegan! We got a scoop of each flavor and all were really creamy. Owner was super nice too.

Pros: All vegan, Local

Cons: A bit pricey ($16 for two medium bowls)

Refreshing break!

So excited to find that all of Glen’s products were vegan. Had the vanilla bean, coconut and mystery flavor (think it was pistachio). My Omni DIL declared it the best ice cream she ever ate!

Pros: A wonderful stop on the road to Hana, Several varieties

Cons: No cons

Not sure if this business understands veganism

I love this coconut frozen treat. However, a month or so ago I stopped and got some deserts. Everything was marketed as Vegan... I enjoyed the turmeric golden milk flavor..

Today I was shopping at the Pauwela store and noticed that the packaging of this flavor is NOT labeled vegan, while others were. It contained honey and bee pollen.

If seems the production and packaging are labeleling products correctly.

However, I'm not sure if the people at the stand are? Unless perhaps the turmeric flavor I had at the stand is different than the turmeric flavor sold in shops.

Pros: Locally grown , Small business , Delicious

Cons: Not 100% vegan , Expensive

I saw another flavor of theirs today that also contained honey. This is not a vegan business. On their social media, they mention using honey in their flavors. But unfortunately, they think that honey is vegan.

The BEST

I understand the ice cream being overpriced because it's in a tourist area, but they should probably give you larger portions or lower the price if they're not going to add a little more in the cup. On the other hand, THIS IS THE BEST ICE CREAM I'VE EVER HAD. Seriously, I wish I lived in Maui just for this ice cream... and I wish there was a location near me.

Pros: Delicious, Beautiful Location, Fresh and Good Quality

Cons: Overpriced, Only Available if You're Traveling or Local, I Miss the Coconut Shell Spoons

Costly Confection

This ice cream is good, but overpriced. The employee was not friendly; he actually seemed annoyed when I asked a question. A tiny scoop was $7 and they only accept cash. This is a nice treat on the Hana Highway, but it's more convenient (and possibly cheaper?) just to buy it at a shave ice shop on the island.

Pros: vegan, different flavors

Cons: overpriced, small portions, poor customer service

MUST STOP!

You definitely have to stop at coconut glens on the way to Hana if you love ice cream. Their ice cream was some of the best I’ve had and you can beat sitting in the beautiful jungle to enjoy it! Be aware prices are $7 for two scoops and it’s CASH ONLY so bring some money with you. We tried the chocolate Mac nut and the green dragon which was mint matcha and both were amazing!

Most Amazing Ice Cream and Flavors

This is a traditional stop I'll be making on all my trips to Hana. The flavors are unique and delicious. I haven't tried them all yet but so far, Salted Caramel is one of my favorites. Owner is very nice and very efficient. Every time I've gone, there's a lot of customers, but never a long wait. The setting is very colorful and tropical.

Pros: Delicious and everything is vegan, Easy Parking, Nice owner
