Close, But No Cig-ar

Inexplicably having missed out on stumbling across a branch of this internationally renowned chain whilst gadding about Europe, I was beyond thrilled to learn of their opening right here in my adopted home. Obviously, me being me, I wasn’t going to hold back when the opportunity arose to order from this establishment, but, when all was said and done, I would find myself wishing that I had.
Trusting in the Turkish provenance upon which this restaurant's brand is built, I naively assumed that they would have the staples nigh-on perfect. Yet, in some sort of defiant, “Hold my beer” moment, they sought to prove otherwise. Out of all the savoury sides I sampled, the only one that came out with any dignity was the vine leaves. Everything else was either bone-dry, bland, or both. The biggest culprit was the crispy stuffed kofte—it held so much potential but definitely flattered to deceive.
It was not all doom and gloom, however, as there were some discernible positives amongst the myriad of mediocrity, most notably the burger and taco. The wrap too received an above-average grade, though it was considerably upstaged by the two former items, as both had a genuine sense of creativity about them that was backed up by flavour and texture.
Also, the chocolate borek, unlike its potato counterpart, was a joy to eat and succeeded in ending the meal on a high note.
Despite the trials and tribulations of the accompanying dishes, the main elements did more than enough to convince me that I should return, so I’m grateful for that, if nothing else.
