Incredible food - Edit
If you are visiting Taipei, you have to visit Chao. The food is absolutely incredible, the vibe is great, and the price is amazing.

Excellent vegan food!! - Edit
This might be my favorite restaurant in the city. I wish this restaurant was in NYC, where I live. Their food is innovative and tasty, leaving me wondering how the dishes were made! One of the most repeated restaurants I've been to in Taipei. 😍🔥 Obsessed!

Great Dishes, Not the Warmest Staff 🤷🏼♀️ - Edit
This place was pretty good overall. The food came out fast and everything tasted fresh, especially the Hokka stir-fry tofu, which ended up being our favorite dish of the night. The flavors were great and the portions were generous.
Read moreThe only thing that could’ve been better was the service — the staff didn’t feel very warm or welcoming and kind of looked like they didn’t want to be bothered. Still, the food itself made the visit worthwhile.

One of the best in Taiwan! - Edit
A great restaurant with food that is jam packed full of flavour. The pork stir fry was amazing and the Taiwanese fried chicken was incredible! It’s very popular and gets very busy so either go early and be prepared to wait or reserve a table.

Surprisingly delicious - Edit
The atmosphere of the restaurant somehow exhibits the impression that the food is going to be great. My omnivore friends were surprised when they found out what the ate were plant based. They kept asking how the fake beef/chicken/shrimp were made

We came in late, were greeted by an english speaking waiter who said we can order by our phone. food was okay imo, but the waiters were really unfriendly and seemed to just want to finish work.

A very busy place, but we managed to get a table for an hour to eat, which was more than enough. We ordered using a qr code and our food arrived a minute after the order. I thought it was a mistake!
Read moreThe food was very good. I had a sweet sour chicken, which was very good and a taiwanese rice which was also very good. We also had another dish, forgot what exactly , which was tasty as well.
I tried stinky tofu, which was awful, but I do not blame the restaurant, so I will give it 5 stars in my review. I believe they cooked it well, but it is definitely not my taste. I mean it tastes okay but it smells so bad.
Will happily go back to the place and eat but no sticky tofu for me!

Best food in Taiwan - Edit
The flavours, the vibes, it was literally the best!! Especially the rose oat milk tea and the cute artsy aquarium (no fish) stole my heart! It’s a truly vegan paradise 💜Definitely make a reservation before going, it‘s always busy. Note: UberEats has Chao in their restaurant list, but I was never able to order..

Great food, especially the mock meats! - Edit
Had a very solid end to my day’s vegan feastery at Chao. Ordered two dishes so I could have a traditional, cold Asian food leftovers for breakfast. The vibe was necessary.
Read moreFried rice was good, but the star was the Stir-Fried Pork with Scallions and White Onions! It was magical. The plant pork was unnaturally pork-like. Thankfully, no animals were harmed in the making of my dinner :)
tldr: try the pork / I hope the other plant meats are just as exceptional!

I enjoyed this meal quite a lot - we got the winter melon tea, sweet and sour chicken, sweet and sour potstickers, beef noodles, and dry pot cauliflower. We really enjoyed everything but the potstickers, which were not our favorite. I’d definitely stop by here again if I find myself back in Taipei!

Cool young vibe - Edit
This place was very lively on a Friday night. It’s a great place to share food. We had sausage fried rice, beef sa cha sauce noodles, and Garlic green beans. The rose caramel oat milk tea was seriously delicious! You take the drinks yourself from the fridge. We were a little confused about how much we would be charged but it was the price on the menu for the whole pitcher.

One of the Beast Meals in Taiwan – My Omni Partner Said So! - Edit
Went here on a recommendation from a NYT article and loved it. I'm vegan, my partner is not, and he said it was one of the best meals he had ever had in Taiwan! For the record, we had Shanghai Rice, Mapo Tofu and Long Green Beans (plus some plain rice). We are definitely going back next time we are visiting Taiwan. I would recommend going with a few friends, because this is definitely the kind of place where you want to order lots of dishes and share. Large selection of interesting beverages too.
Read moreP.S. I liked their (vegan) aquarium!
Update: Been back several times in July 2024, still as delicious as ever. Ordered: Mapo Tofu, Spicy Braised Tofu Skins, Nyonya Fish Curry. Taiwanese beer and black beer are also great.

Perfect for sharing! - Edit
Someone I met in Taipei took me to this restaurant and together with his girlfriend we were able to share quite a lot of dishes here. The food was amazing! I loved the vegan shrimp and the variety of flavours at this place. It may be somewhat more expensive than other places but I think it is highly worthwhile. I would advise to go here with a group of people so you can try out a variety of dishes as I think this is the best way to explore this restaurant.

Interesting place - Edit
This is a very interesting place. They serve a variety of stir-fried dishes. Many of them try to mimic meat dishes. I'm generally not a fan of this, but everything I tried here was great. The restaurant also has a very vibrant atmosphere.

10/10! - Edit
This is superb! The price is maybe a bit more steep since you’re still sitting on little chairs but the food is amazing. Especially the shrimp pineapple balls are a must. We were with 2 persons and ordered 3 dishes and 1 bowl of white rice to share. That was sufficient for us. 10% service charge is added to the bill.

My top discovery in Taiwan, Chao. It’s located near Sogo and nearby area is clean and hip.

Me: Is everything on the menu vegan?
Staff: yes! Order away!
30 mins later, me also: gotta get some take out for later. Even my parents thought their foods are amazing.
