Good cappuccino oatmilk

Sat here during our cyclingtour along the coast. It’s worth the detour from the regular route (coast& castles)

Lovely food with a gorgeous view

As Needles Eye Cafe hurtles toward its first anniversary this May 2026, we popped in for “just one drink.” You can guess how that went. One drink became dinner, dinner became dessert-worthy levels of smug satisfaction, and suddenly we were having one of those unexpectedly brilliant evenings you try (and fail) to recreate.

We’re no strangers here—usually found clutching a pint by the shore—but early dining attempts post-opening left us a bit… underwhelmed. “Vegan option” once translated to “surgical removal of joy from a dish,” occasionally to the point it needed a witness protection program rather than a menu description.

Fast-forward to now: we ducked inside to escape the chill, got a pint and idly asked for a menu, and—Holy guacamole—plot twist.

Not only were there proper vegan options, there was an entire bespoke veggie/vegan menu. Reader, we did not hesitate.
We ordered two dishes to share (because growth is important, but so is greed).

First up: the Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, and black truffle ravioli, swimming in a dairy-free white wine and chive beurre blanc. Six generously stuffed parcels arrived looking like they had their life together—and they did. The sauce? Silky, indulgent, and unapologetically “buttery” without a whisper of dairy. The griddle-toasted sourdough didn’t stand a chance; it was deployed immediately to mop up every last drop like a carb-based crime scene cleaner.

Then came the vegan fish and chips—featuring banana blossom, a risky move unless you know what you’re doing. Thankfully, they really know what they’re doing. Seasoned with nori and cooked to that elusive sweet spot, it delivered on both flavour and texture. Honestly, if this fooled a fish-eater, I wouldn’t testify against it. The homemade tartare was a revelation—balanced, punchy, and easily one of the best I’ve had. Mushy peas? Thick, proud, and not remotely soupy. Chips? Crispy, well-seasoned, and fully aware they were part of something special.
For context: in five years of being vegan, I’ve had exactly one other fish-and-chips attempt that came close. This one now wears the crown. Even ’The Front’—long a solid contender—has so much catching up to do I doubt they’ll steal this crown.

All in all, this was a proper glow-up moment. From “we’ll just have a pint” to “we’re emotionally invested in this menu”, the Needles Eye Cafe has firmly entered our regular dining rotation.

Pros: Dedicated vegan menu, great quality food, and the best dining view in Northumberland

Cons: No vegan meals on the brunch menu -yet!?🤞, a small kitchen so you may have to wait, And you need to book to sit inside on a busy day
