Another branch of the Beyond Veggie restaurants. Same menu of vegetarian food and cakes: pasta, pizza, sandwich, salad, noodle, and rice dishes. Reported closed, Mar 2019.
I went there for lunch on a Monday, they showed me their menu which is in English, I asked if they had something without eggs and without any milk products and without honey: they had not a single thing on their menu that was vegan! ...except for some drinks. So I could not order anything, I had to leave. I went to 'Veggie Time' (same building, second floor), buffet style, they had 2 vegan options.
Good place & nice staff but they don't know what vegan means as they served me honey and milk ... So be sure the staff understand you well or just order a juice.
Delicious but vegan food is not labeled in the menu - Edit
Had a wonderful dining experience, service was alright but sadly their menu is not properly labelled which dishes are vegan. There are 2 different types of tofu available in Beyond Veggie, be reminded to request for the one without egg. Tofu mixed with egg has a softer texture... Their cakes are not vegan even clearly indicated no rennet or egg is used. Little pricey, and after reading other reviews, I realized most dishes are not vegan and more in the grey area. Will probably has to ask more questions in future as the staff themselves may not understand the ingredients (especially processed items, sauce etc) used in the dishes.
The food in this place is really delicious! Vegan options aren’t marked on the menu so you do have to ask, but our waiter seemed pretty confident answering questions as to whether or not something was vegan. It can be difficult to be 100% sure about what food contains in Asia in general, so that’s my only concern. Overall pretty amazing!
Since this is a vegetarian restaurants, most of the dishes are NOT vegan of course. There's no clear indication vegan dishes so one has to rely on staff's explanation. The staff are lack of knowledge on the menu items, I've even tried contacting their HQ to inquire for more details (sadly helpful at the beginning and at last reminded me this is JUST a vegetarian restaurant and vegans seem to question too much).
Firstly, cakes are NOT vegan despite it says no animal rennet is used, the cakes contains dairy milk. Satay is NOT vegan due to marinated/dipped with egg batter, even their deep friend mushrooms are NOT vegan neither. Curd Cutlets (beancurd wrapped with seaweed) & pasta also contains egg.
Next, the lion mane mushrooms are NOT vegan (contains dairy, informed by their HQ). Wish to highlight to vegans visiting to Asian countries, instead of just inquiring dishes contains egg or milk (or dairy) is not enough, don't forget bone char (animal bones) is found in most sugar. Similarly, sauces prepared in almost all vegetarian restaurants are not vegan ie vegetarian oyster/mushroom sauce which contains sugar, you might be surprised to find even soy sauce used in most vegetarian restaurants contains sugar too! So vegan please ask and check properly and don't accidentally make your stomach a graveyard for animals. Last I checked with Beyond Veggie, they use Bragg liquid amino which is vegan friendly.
The only safest vegan dish is their signature superior noodle soup - using Bragg liquid amino with vegetables & mushrooms (ask not to use Lion mane mushrooms that contains dairy).
Little pricey, and hope this franchise restaurant would come out with few vegan dishes options for vegans!
I'm a vegan that stayed quite a bit in KK and I had quite a hard time eating out (didn't have a kitchen). Beyond Veggie by Secret Recipe (they also have non-vegetarian restaurants that are just called Secret Recipe) is probably the best you'll find. You'll have to check what's vegan and what not and it's not the cheapest, but at least you'll have a bit of choice. There are several outlets in KK. It's tasty food and rather good service, although they won't have everything on the menu... what seems to be common in Malaysia.
It simply was an utterly delicious meal. I had a tofu dish and a mashroom dish, plenty of food for 2 people. It was a bit pricy, but still reasonable. I recommend this place 100% and will come back again for sure.
staff are great and can address concerns from vegan to offer tofu that does not have eggs. If you take the menu items with eggs away you are left with very little choice. Would recommend nonetheless. Staff are great.
My first experience with the Beyond Veggie chain was in Bintulu - and it was not a particularly joyous experience (see review). But after disappointing meals at three highly-rated eateries in KK, it was time to revisit Beyond Veggie.
Thankfully, this Beyond Veggie did not suffer from the problems of the Bintulu branch. Service was professional and food was pleasing in both taste and appearance. Price is same as Bintulu, but while a set meal price is double typical Sarawak prices, it is only about 50% higher than typical KK price. And nothing else I tried in KK even came close to this quality. All those overcooked, overpriced, bland economy rice failures in KK cannot compare.
My experience at both Imago and Suria Sabah (1st fl) branches were the same, so this review is posted for both.
