Fills a gap of wide ranging comfort Italian food in New Haven - Edit
Bella Casa Vegana is part of Costa Pizza on Whitney. They offer a wide ranging menu of grinders and pizzas and desserts that don’t skimp out or act as a placeholder option where I’d be afraid they might cut them out of the menu at any point. I’m a huge fan of the consistency of the vegan cheeses and the huge variety of proteins and vegetables. The menu at the moment seems a bit expensive but they are planning some changes ahead so we’ll see what comes next!
My original review of Costa that should more apply to Bella Cosa:
Costa has quite a few alternatives to chicken and beef in the form of grinders and pizzas. Some of their items include “chicken” fingers with vegan “blue cheese”, “burger” subs and grinders, “meat”ball subs, Parmesan, “sausage” and peppers, over salads, etc. If I’m not feeling Asian cuisine or comfort Caribbean food from Vegan Ahava or Ninth Square Market Caribbean Too, I’m going here.
One thing I keep track of when it comes to “voting” with my money towards veganism is if an establishment only contains vegan options as a “dietary” alternative or if the business is strictly vegan, maybe even with the term in their business name, or somewhere in between. Costa doesn’t seem to be fully compromising here, which I appreciate. While they do sell animal products, flesh, milk, etc. they have a large vegan sign out front and under their main menu online, VEGAN leads off the selection. I think it would be better if they kept moving in this direction and I fully support that and in line with HappyCow policy, I only use >4 stars for fully vegan establishments. But I want to put a note of appreciation that someone here is taking the time to make vegan options more than just a small print checkbox to tick.
Not a vegan restaurant, but great vegan options - Edit
As the other reviewers have said, this is NOT a vegan restaurant. It is just the vegan menu of Costa Pizza, which prepares and serves meat and dairy products. The vegan offerings from Costa are great though, I've enjoyed their cheese pizza, buffalo wings, meatball and hamburger subs. However, it's pricey at $15 for an order of wings and $30 for a pizza, and you should definitely not go here if you're looking for an exclusively vegan kitchen.
This shouldn’t come up as a fully vegan restaurant. It is actually part of Costa Pizza, which serves meat and dairy. The food was good, but you have to specify you’re ordering vegan. They almost gave me the wrong order.
