Tasty Paella - Edit
The restaurant highlights authentic local cuisine and has very few vegan options but those are clearly labeled (also in English). There's one vegan/vegetarian paella, which we had and enjoyed. The portions are indeed big but still manageable. For the prize, we even expected a bit more. We were unlucky our paella was a bit burnt, while the rice was still a bit hard. If you order softdrinks (refresco) we recommend ordering Fanta limon instead of Sprite. It's larger for the same prize.
Read moreIt is important to note that you have to order your paella one hour in advance, otherwise you will have to wait that long until it's prepared. Small bonus: you can take a boat directly from the back of the restaurant to see Albufera.

Surely a tourist trap? - Edit
I can only assume (and I hate to say it) that other reviews for this place must be paid for (or we were just terribly unlucky) as this was by far the worst paella I have ever tasted. Salty to a point of being almost inedible, undercooked (served to us in 20 minutes rather than the expected 1 hour) and with very little 'good stuff' inside. So disappointing, especially considering the supposed seal of approval that being part of the 'Gastro Arrocerias Group' should bring. As my partner said in her review - avoid like the plague! Squirting ketchup on some spuds doesn't make it a patats bravas!

Cons: Terrible paella, Terrible patatas bravas, Terrible service

The best Paella - Edit
This was BY FAR the best vegan paella! It was so good we went back that same week to eat here again. Next to the food you’re seated at the waterside, the people are nice and the Sangria was fresh.

Avoid like the plague - Edit
I really hate leaving bad reviews – as you can see from my review history, I’m not someone who badmouths businesses – but I feel compelled to warn others about this place.
Read moreMy husband and I were so excited to try a proper paella in the birthplace of the dish, especially from a restaurant that’s part of the association for traditional Valencian cuisine. We’d already had a couple of paellas while staying in Valencia, but we were still holding out hope for that standout, authentic experience. El Rek looked promising, especially as a few vegan reviewers had left decent comments and the menu had clear labels.
We arrived around 12:30 and were the first ones in, though the restaurant did fill up quickly. The menu is accessed via a QR code and states clearly that paella takes about an hour, which we were more than happy to wait for – it’s a good sign if it’s made fresh. We ordered patatas bravas to tide us over, but what arrived was literally just plain potatoes with a squirt of cheap ketchup. Not a good start.
Then our paella arrived after just 20 minutes – a full 40 minutes earlier than expected. It arrived without a serving spoon, so we had to chase one down. The rice was undercooked, the very few beans in the dish were hard and the broth was extremely salty – inedible really. There was none of the lovely caramelised crust you expect in a well-made paella – it had clearly been rushed.
The service didn’t help matters. The staff were completely inattentive, and no one came to check on us during the meal. I ended up leaving most of mine after picking out a few of the vegetables, and my husband – who is never fussy and usually eats everything – felt sick afterwards. That pretty much says it all.
To top it off, we had to ask multiple times for the bill before giving up and going to the front desk ourselves. We felt forgotten about, and honestly, we briefly considered walking out without paying – it was that bad.
Perhaps this place is a bit of a tourist trap? Either way, with so many other restaurants in El Palmar, there’s absolutely no reason to settle for something this disappointing.

Great vegan paella - Edit
La paella vegana era favolosa! Alla fine non ho capito tutti gli ingredienti, ma vi assicuro che vale l'attesa di 1 ora della preparazione.

Excellent vegan paella - Edit
This restaurant us run by the same team running Arrocería Maribel, which is just a few meters away. Menu list exactly the same and it's more than advisable to book in advance and order the paella so that it's ready when you arrive. We ordered a vegan paella with seasonal vegetables for 3 and it was super tasty. Servings were so huge it could have been for 5 people, so we took the rest home. They have vegetable milk for coffee. No vegan desserts other than seasonal fruits, though.
