Very nice food. Nice staff

Tried for the first time. For lunch. 2 persons. Had the the injera bread platter (single size for $15), but also added the foul ('fool'), onto the platter. This was enough for 2. Foul was very tasty also. Prices very reasonable and the staff very nice. The place is pretty basic. They should have some traditional music playing, to raise the ambience a bit.

Pros: All vegan. Good price. Friendly staff

Cons: Needs bit more ambience.

Words can’t describe 100% vegan awesomeness

The food here is just so good. Tried the foul (pronounced fool) and was blown away. Nicest people and the coffee is authentic old school Ethiopian style (straight from the country that invented it!)

Pros: The food, The coffee, Most of all, the people.

Nice food and owner

The whole night was an experience, from the food to the owner (who is a famous ethiopian singer). All vegan but maybe due to restrictions there is no options to choose from right now but still good for us. Extremely delicious and there was a mix up with tables and the owner gave us a bottle of wine to make up for it. Would recommend!

Vegan again apparently

2020: vegan again according the owners.

Business has been sold (May 2019) and is no longer vegan, it is now omni.

Very flavourful and honest food at a very good price. Hopefully everyone who likes good food will support Addis Adeba. Well worth a visit, even from the eastern suburbs, or peninsula.

What a shame. This place was unique in Melbourne: as far as I know the only vegan Ethiopian restaurant in the city. It made Footscray a bit special that way.

Definitely a pity and the new business has not yet been assessed as to whether it is a viable listing on Happycow. The previous owner suggested on facebook that there will still be vegan menu items, time will tell.

I have been recently and checked with staff who assured me everything on the menu is vegan?there are also signs out the front saying it’s vegan.
Must have changed back to being all vegan again...
I have sent an update through to HappyCow.

Surprising, but definitely a good thing.
They do not have much of an online presence and the menu on zomato still includes very non vegan items.
Did you happen to notice if they are still cash only?
I see you mentioned leather chairs, did you notice whether they still had skins on the walls as well?

Hello, I'm happy to announce that the old owners are back in business and we have gone back to serving 100% vegan dishes!

Great to know, hopefully you have removed the dead animals from the walls and have verified that all alcohol is also vegan. We did enjoy our only visit and were sad to hear that the business had sold.

Delicious vegan feast!

Updated review December 2019

We have been going here frequently recently... I almost always get the mixed vegetable option and my dining companion gets the miser wet. It’s delicious each time we go and we really like the staff. Everything on the menu is vegan.

———

We had the banquet option with lots of different curries served on injera with more injera on the side. The food was delicious. Staff were lovely and service was quick. I’ll be coming back again!

Tasty Authentic African Cuisine

Authentic and tasty. Great for a group - we shared the mixed vegetable platter for a group of three and there was plenty to go around! Owner was very pleasant too and gave us some extra injera.

Pros: Great service, Generous portions, Wholesome food

Delightful

For $35 we shared the vegan platter. Although there are many other options on the menu, we chose this one so as to sample many of the dishes in one sitting. It looked amazing coming out of the kitchen. I think everyone in the restaurant had the same idea.

I loved that each dish had it's own complex flavours and the injera bread was plentiful. Beautifully presented, with a fresh garden salad - I'm not sure i could go past this next time either.

We also enjoyed an Ethiopian beer.

Lovely service, bright decor and easily walkable from Footscray station.

Go there and support this local family business, while enjoying wholesome, tasty food.

Pros: Amazing flavours, Wholesome food, Reasonably priced

Amazing Healthy Homecooked Food

I had the combination platter and it was probably the best $15 I’ve ever spent! The lady who owns the shop was so lovely and advised me on what to eat. The meal was delicious and filling, just simple, tasty, home cooked whole food. After a few days of living off the abundance of vegan junk food in Melbourne, my body was craving and absolutely loved this healthy meal.
I urge everyone to support this beautiful shop and it’s lovely owners if you’re in Melbourne!

Pros: Delicious , Cheap, Big portions

Amazing flavours

I was so excited to try this place. We ordered the shared platter. I really enjoyed the flavours of every vegetable and lentil mix. It was a generous serve too. I also had a chai latte with soy which I liked. I’ll be coming back.

Satisfying

The single-serve vegetable combination platter is a very generous serving of delicious curries served on fluffy injera. If you are a smaller eater, this would be enough to share with another diner (I couldn't get through all of mine). It is excellent value at $15. The Ethiopian coffee is great too.

Will happily return!

Decent and reasonably priced

I did a double take when I rode past this restaurant, which has been around for a while, and saw ‘Vegan Only’ on the window. I went in to check it out and discovered it was true. We had a combination meal for two ($35), with chickpea, lentil, potato and kale dishes, mostly pretty good, reasonably tasty and so filling (with the injera), and very reasonably priced. The service was also really friendly and helpful.
