- About:
- Hi there! I am from Melbourne, Australia and became vegetarian as a child (1979) years ago. In 2006 I felt the burden of what I was learning about the fate of animals for human consumption, entertainment, etc..and became vegan. I have many reasons, intially just the idea of eating flesh, (and my animal friends) really disgusted me. As I got older and read more- as I am sure a lot of you can relate to, I could see more and more reasons why people should not eat carcasses, or support animal cruelty. The reality is I am also an environmentalist and have felt for a long time that it's not healthy for the planet either, this exploitation of resources. Interesting to read that The United Nations has reported that animal agriculture accounts for 18% of greenhouse gases, which is MORE than automobiles. Intuitively, I have always felt it healthier to not eat meat and dairy. I noticed the effects of milk on my system, the sinus and headaches, and even before I claimed to be vegan, I really didn't have much dairy or eggs. The China Study has confirmed my feelings, and I suppose health is another reason for being vegan. I love having this resource, which I am tapping into as I am currently travelling. I have also written a number of reviews. It's great to hear from other like minded people from around the world. I would be happy to answer questions about my local vegan world if you are visiting!

More About Me
Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I love animals! How we treat them is really horrific and we have alternatives. I refuse to support animal cruelty, and that was my initial reason for going from vegetarian to vegan. My reason for going vegetarian as a child was simply that I loved animals and didn't want to eat them. I also am appalled at the statistics from a resource perspective about the harm to environment. Health benefits are clear and I believe that one day it will be considered as bad as smoking for your health. The good karma and kindness I feel in my heart are added benefits. :)
I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I originally joined because I desperately wanted some vegan food while travelling (back in 2007). Now I still love discovering new places, foods and drooling over photos. Plus, I enjoy sharing the best of Melbourne for vegans.
Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
I love Melbourne! Next to that would be Vancouver. Lots of places I would love to visit, especially ones that have an alternative bent and plenty of vegan options. Also on my list is the Phuket J festival of all things vegetarian - Thailand I will make it one day!
Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
It does depend on my mood. But I love dosa- indian pancakes with potato filling! Also, specific Melbourne made foods I love are Vegie sesame prawn toast ( from Enlightened Cuisine in Melbourne), the Laksa (from Vegie hut), pho (from Yong's Green or Fina's 2), Zebra dream coconut ice-cream.. hmmm.
Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
I love 'the kind diet' and vegan cookbooks - such as 'skinny bitch in the kitch', 'La Dolce Vegan!: Vegan Livin' Made Easy'. I like the recently launched 'Lush' magazine, which is produced in Sydney.
