A hidden pearl in lovely laid back historic Town
A little oasis of peace, but it is on a back street so easy to miss. I have had lunch there several times, all veggie, and some vegan ...Am sure they would adapt. Typical dishes are lentil mousaaka, curries, veg burgers, veg chili in tortilla wrap. I had a wicked choc and cashew brownie once, which was the best ever. Genuinely home made food. Prices are fair. Another bonus is the vinyl records on display and sale. I have been to the prebook only evenings, as it is not open usually in eves. I felt the food was not quite as good, altho still acceptable. Eg i had a melanza parmigiana, but it had no mozzaella, only a tiny bit of parmesan. Staff are very warm and friendly, and there is cake and tea also and good chai latte. I have to mention the loos too, it is an old building and the loo is very very narrow with mirrors on one wall to make it less oppressive... quirky and a bit weird!

I've been going to Demuth's (and Rachel Demuth's Vegetarian cookery school) for many years, but infrequently as I don't live that close to Bath. It did go through a phase a few years ago when I felt it wasn't as good as when Rachel was the Chef, but at my last visit it really was back on top form. My husband and I were meeting a friend who was a bit late and so we ordered a side dish of saute new potatoes to share, which was huge and yummy. So when our friend arrived, we decided to share a sandwich and then share a pud. The sandwich we chose was lush wholegrain toasted bread on mixed leaves with some kind of delicious spicy hummus with preserved lemon oil (mental note to get some of that!) and roasted squash slices. Purrrrfect. Pudding was a choc mousse (nice and dark and not too sweet) with a pink peppercorn tuile (whatever that is but it tasted good!). I would highly recommend this place - staff are charming and it is pricey but portions are large so you can share! Also would recommend Rachel Demuth's fantastic cookery books - available from her website if you google her name.

Good food veggie options
Authentic Greek taverna. Good for haloumi salad, imam, which is aubergine and yoghurt layers baked with tomato sauce, and spag napoletana. Lovely greek yoghurt with honey and nuts to follow. Nice service and friendly cats patrolling the meat eaters for tidbits!

Paris in Spring!
We had a fantastic meal for our wedding anniversary last June (2010) in Le Potager. Delicieux bourginonne (I am now a fan of seitan) and my husband had a fab goulash. Yummy chocolate mousse for pudding. The Patron was charming and seemed to understand my schoolgirl French. Highly recommended and thanks to Happy Cow - would never have found this gem without you in the first place!
