Momos In Berlin, Germany

This Easter weekend, Momos in Berlin, Germany, celebrated their first birthday. I joined the party, met the owners and tried their speciality dish for the first time.

Located on a small, leafy side street off Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg, you probably wouldn’t find this place unless you were looking for it. You also wouldn’t expect to find that it’s run by two Germans, Marc and Martin. Both have been friends since the age of 18 and last year decided to give up their jobs as a buyer and a nurse and open up a restaurant.

Inspired by the Asian fusion food which is so popular in the UK and Australia, they decided to travel to Asia to be inspired further and come up with the concept for their restaurant. They took the rich, spicy flavours found in Nepalese steamed dumplings (momos) – adapting the recipe a little for European taste buds – and came up with more vegetarian and vegan fillings, something which they feel is unique in Berlin. The result resembles a Polish dumpling (pierogi) but packs a punch in terms of flavour. You can choose to either have your momos steamed (the traditional way) or fried, both of which are delicious.

Their vision is to offer a lot of food for an affordable price without sacrificing the quality, while at the same time offering a healthy, high quality alternative to the number of veggie fast food restaurants that have opened up in Berlin in the last few years. Most of the food offered is vegan and they always use fresh, organic ingredients. They feel that being a sustainable and socially responsible business is essential and this is reflected in all areas of the business, from the food and drink on offer to the packaging and even the renewable energy which powers the place. They are also working on a gluten-free recipe, fresh juices and smoothies and are working on keeping their menu fresh by introducing two new fillings every couple of months.
