Phillip Chapman Lesh is the bass player and the founding member of the American jam and folk rock group, The Grateful Dead.

Formed in 1965 in San Francisco, The Grateful Dead was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country, jazz, psychedelia, space music, and gospel. The band played live performances of long musical improvisation.

In its 30-year career, The Grateful Dead was known as "The Dead," and their large and loyal following of mostly hippie fans were known as "Deadheads." Many of the Deadheads followed the band from concert to concert for years, and made each concert parking lot into a festival.
