I live in Dallas and I remember a few years ago people voted 51%-49% to name a street after him. The city decided against on the ground that he wasn't from TX! What racist bullshit! We have "Martin Luther King Blvd" and "Malcom X St", obviously not from here either. They wouldn't do such a thing with black or Jewish people. They know they'd never put up with that. Makes me embarrassed to be Mexican. We don't really get organized socially/politically like other people.

In 2006 I had attended a meeting at a local community farm in South Central Los Angeles where Cesar Chavez's granddaughter was present. We were lending our support to the local residents who were struggling to keep their community farm open. On the city-owned lot, many of the local residents had grown organic vegetables, and some had sold a portion of the produce to supplement their meager income. But the city had decided to take the lot and sell it to a wealthy builder who had sued to get it. Ultimately, the developer won, and the resident farmers, known as the South Central Los Angeles Farmers, were kicked off the lot. It was quite sad.
