## Washi Matou Waffle Towel German engineering meets Japanese craftsmanship. Two traditional brands, thies 1856® and Fukuroya Towel 1926®, join forces to bring you towels and household goods made in Japan. Wabi-Sabi Zen at its finest. Japan's climate is humid, so washi, a breathable material, has long been used for shoji screens and as a partition to organize living spaces. By twisting washi into thread and weaving a towel from it, the makers created a towel that absorbs water faster than cotton and dries quickly. ### How washi thread is made Washi thread is made by cutting paper from a unique Japanese paper machine into strands 1 to 4 mm wide and twisting them into thread. Made from bark, washi thread absorbs water faster than cotton. The porous material has small holes on its surface. Because it contains a lot of air, it dries easily and feels smooth to the touch. The paper is made from hemp. ### The waffle weave The three-dimensional waffle fabric absorbs water well, thanks to the combination of washi threads and a special weaving method. The textured waffle weave has a large surface area that touches the skin, making it even more absorbent. Because the fabric is thin and uneven, it creates air layers and is easy to dry even after it gets really wet. Whether after washing or during sports, you will not feel the discomfort of using a wet towel. The waffle weave makes the towel fluffy, soft and voluminous. Because the fabric is thin, it dries in less than half the drying time of a thicker classic towel. ### Fresh and comfortable Japanese shoji screens and fusuma doors are traditionally made from plant-derived washi paper, which is said to have deodorizing and temperature-regulating properties. Washi thread has excellent hygroscopicity: it absorbs not only water but also moisture from the air, so it does not easily feel damp. Classic towels left wet for a while can develop bacteria and retain smells. Washi waffle towels are easy to dry, and the Japanese paper does not retain odors, so the towel stays comfortable to use. Towels made only with washi thread are usually hard, difficult to stretch and rough in texture. Blending washi with cotton and using a waffle weave greatly improves softness and volume. The towels are dyed in soft hues for a calm look in your home. ### About the makers Since 1856, the thies team has been fascinated by Japanese culture and traditional crafts. When they came across the Shizuku project, they decided to work together and bring it to Europe. Fukuroya was established in 1926 in the Izumi region, Osaka's largest towel production area. Over nearly a century, Fukuroya has continually refined its techniques to create soft, highly absorbent towels. ### Composition - 55% cotton - 25% cotton - 20% washi ### Size - Size S: 34 cm × 35 cm ### Origin Made in Japan ### Care Wash below 30 °C.
