Disappointed

I have been cooking and eating vegan for over 3 years. Finding new vegan/vegan friendly restaurants is a challenge. We had appetizers: guac and chips (guac was too salty) and buffalo tigers (which were tasty but it wasn’t a buffalo sauce). The dressing on my salad was very tasty, but I didn’t like the pomodoro penne. The sauce had too much of a herb and not enough flavor as a pasta sauce should have. I could also have done without the Field Roast sausages. Tofurkey have a much better flavor. TBH vegan Asian and Indian restaurants have the flavors do you don’t miss the meat and dairy.

Pros: Cool atmosphere , Family friendly

Cons: Need to work on their recipes

Deserves zero stars

This place is just awful and needs to get their entire management situation under control. I placed a takeout order for lunch (at 1:45 pm, mind you) and had to wait 42 minutes for my food to come out. When I checked in with the hostess at the 30-minute mark, she said there were still two orders in front of mine and that she “didn’t know” how long mine would be and couldn’t even give me an estimate. Are you kidding me? People/parties who arrived AFTER me received their food 15 minutes before I did and were done eating by the time mine was ready. Beyond the absolutely ludicrous wait time, this place is too expensive for such mediocre food. I took a few bites when I returned to my training seminar (that I was late returning to thanks to the incredible mismanagement of this diner) and it was so bland and over-fried and honestly just disgusting that I threw the rest in the garbage. What a waste. I should have just gone down the street to Freddy’s and gotten veggie sushi out of the refrigerator case — that would have been tastier and a better value than this garbage. HappyCow won’t let me rate this place less than two stars, but they deserve zero.

Pros: 100% vegan, Large menu

Cons: Incredibly poor time management, Too expensive for what it is, Mediocre food

Don't come here if you have places to be

I never write bad reviews but this time I want to. We've been here twice and both times we had to wait so long for food to come out. The first time we thought it was a one-time thing, the waiter even gave us a discount for the long wait. This second time we came for dinner, arrived at 7:20pm. At 7:56pm we still had only gotten the appetizer. We had places to go so I had to cancel the food and I left without eating dinner. They didn't seem too apologetic either and gave us a petty excuse. Everyone working there seemed very relaxed to be honest, I've worked at busy service places before and everyone is busting. Not here. If you are in Portland there many better places to go.

An Off Day?

I had been looking forward to trying this place since our last visit to Portland. Reading the other reviews here it's hard to believe we went to the same place. Something was terribly wrong in the kitchen. The fries were way overcooked; the chick'n tenders were slightly overcooked; the pancakes were gummy (did I get the gluten-free by accident?). My partner enjoyed her tempeh-BLTA, but her fries too had been cooked to leatheriness. Some of the green pepper strips in my plate were overcooked on one end and virtually raw at the other. I'm hoping this was just a fluke, because the menu is enticing and the place itself is fun. We'll try it again on our next visit, but if cooking like this continues I fear it won't be here by then.

Pros: Promising menu, Lots of choices, Good service

Cons: execution in the kitchen, Gluten-free pancakes by default?

Openly Racist Establishment

This is not the type of establishment I will ever return to. The food did not blow my mind for the price and the owners are not getting my money again.

Pros: None

Cons: Mediocre premade food, Racist owner

Racist

My girlfriend and I used to LOVE Vertical Diner. We would go there at least once a week, and had become fairly close with a few of the staff members there. That was until June of 2020, when the founder Ian decided it would be a good idea to make a horribly racist and disgusting “All Lives Matter” post on the Vertical Diner Instagram. We have stopped going there since, and will not be returning

Pros: All vegan, Great atmosphere, Friendly staff

Cons: Racist owner, Racist owner, Racist owner

Outrageous review, you're just some extreme political ideologue, All Life Matters means including animals as well as humans and is no way racist.. fool! Owner of diner should be suing you quite honestly!

Bad Management, Slow Service

Slow service, doesn't support people of color, sets glue traps, gaslights employees and customers.

Cons: Expensive, Slow, Unsupportive of Community and Employees

Overpriced, bland, and racist owner

The food here is super expensive for what it is, although the pancakes are pretty good I'm not going to lie. But I would avoid the sandwiches at all cost. Unfortunately the owner has a track record of "all lives matter" rhetoric, so many of us locals are boycotting this place.

Pros: Good pancakes

Cons: Racist owner

Wrong Hours

Businesses need to stop taking for granted the Happycow platform. Travelers need updated hours. It makes not revisiting a business. Of course, in the age of Covid. Calling every single establishment is essential. Was hoping to try new fare.

Pros: Plant based

Cons: Hours not posted
