A small 100% vegan restaurant located in the heart of Chinatown on a crowded alley way. Each day the menu changes, except for a few staples, such as mock Chinese pork, mock beef patty, satay, and local greens. Owner is friendly and happy to explain what each dish is and how it is made. No gluten is used in the making of the mock meats. Directions: From Glodok Bus Station, walk north on Jl Pintu Besar Selatan (toward Kota Bus Station). Turn left at Jl Pancoran and walk down street for a couple of minutes. Chinatown will be on your left. There are 2 alleyways that are part of Chinatown. Turn left at the 2nd alleyway (the more narrow one). If you reach A&W Burgers, you've gone too far. It's about halfway down the alley on the left. On the food display case at the front of the restaurant, it says vegetarian in big red letters. Open Tue-Sun 8:00am-4:00pm.

En me promenant dans Chinatown, j'ai rencontré Handi. Le lendemain je me suis rendue dans son restaurant : sa cuisine est fabuleuse et vraiment étonnante ! Si vous êtes accompagné d'une personne qui dit de la nourriture végétarienne qu'elle est ennuyante, rendez vous ensemble dans ce restaurant et vous le ferez rapidement changer d'avis ! Merci Handi pour ta nourriture, pour ton sourire, ta disponibilité et tout le reste. Lorsque je reviendrai sur Jakarta promis je repasserai te voir :)

Warm hearts, fully bellies :) - Edit

We discovered this warung through YouTube and decided we had to go exploring around Glodok/Pancoran in order to find it. After asking around for the tiny sidestreet and a fruitless search around the main Chinese market, we found it!! We chatted with P. Handi at length about his experiences and culinary delights; the rendang was especially good, made from mushrooms and definitely the best rendang I've ever had in Indonesia (the regular beef in classic rendang is usually tough; the mushroom meat substitute here was flavorful with a great mouthfeel). He even shared information about some upcoming local cultural events. He's absolutely amazing, and the food's even better! We'll see you soon, P. Handi!

The Best in Town - Edit

I'm non vegetarian, but this small restaurant give me a vision to become one. Koh Handi has various delicious vegetarian menu with Indonesian flavor like Rendang, Chicken with Yellow spice and many more. With affordable prices you wouldn't regret having some lunch here. With his knowledge about being vegetarian and a nice man to talk with. I wanna be a vegetarian now.

Best in town! - Edit

After 10 years away from Indonesia we came back for short visit and discovered this amazing vegan Jewel in the heart of Glodok. Food is fantastic so is pak Handi and his wife. They both prepare and cook the food everyday adding a touch of good vibes and great conversations in a quirky and charming ambience. Thanks both ! Maria & Santiago

Great street eats! - Edit

This treasure is a little hard to find but really worth the effort! Highlight of Jakarta for us.

Handy Andy only serves vegan options made with huge amounts of love and he's super friendly.

You need to make your way here!!

Pros: Nothing but incredibly delicious vegan options mad, Super friendly and wonderful cook

Cons: There aren't more stalls like this one, A little hard to find haha but sooo worth it =)

Fantastic food + lovely atmosphere - Edit

Vegetarian Restaurant was the best thing that happened to us in Jakarta. It's not very easy to find but directions from other posts on happyCow are helpful. You can also ask anyone in the Chinatown, they know, there is only one Vegetarian bar.
Food was wonderful, fresh and full of flavor.
The owner speaks great english and is most probably one of the most friendly and kind people on Earth.
We ate there 3 days in a row, as long as we were staying in Jakarta, and every day there was something new.
Go there early, before 14-15h otherwise all the food might be gone.
This restaurant is great for your stomach and soul.

a bit hard to find, anyways it's definitely worth going there. the place is located in the middle of a food market.
they serve one of the best fake meat I ever had in my whole life.
spicy as well, so if you love Street food, this places is a must!!!!

Good food and some enlightment to go with it! - Edit

Kevin and Anna say: It maybe hard to find, but keep it up because it is well worth it!

The food tastes more than wonderful. Try the sate! And make sure you have a nice talk with the owner, an enlightened being who is happy to talk about his meditations, his 20 years of vegan-ism and his wife and children.

We really enjoyed ourselves there and stayed for over an hour to just enjoy some tea, coffee and a talk.

It closes early though, round 16h, and is closed on mondays. Googlemaps: Find directons to the A&W! And enter the alley, one minute walk and on your left

Delicious vegan restaurant! - Edit

We stumbled upon this amazing place by chance when asking another stall if the food they served was vegetarian just to have to have them laugh in our face in response but then point us across the street to this place! Food was delicious, we had the rice, rendang, satay and a crispy peanut and potato food all of which were delicious! The textures of the 'meat' especially the satay was incredible though quite strange as it seemed so similar. I was interested in the recipes and the owner took the time to tell me how and what the dishes were made out of. We also had a very interesting conversation about Buddhism and his values etc
The owner also spoke brilliant English which was good as it meant he was able to explain everything very well!
Definitely recommend it! However it is tricky to find, quite easily over looked

YUM! - Edit

Super yummy food and a really friendly owner who will happily tell you all about each dish, as well as giving you helpful advice about the local area, too. Good selection, and you choose what you want and pay according to how many different things you have. I would recommend the rendang, which is absolutely delicious! There's also a really yummy selection of pickled fruit being sold at the entrance, which serves very nicely as dessert.

A lovely place to get lunch - Edit

The food selection was fantastic, and the owner was super friendly. He cares about his customers, and wants them to want to come back again. Unfortunately, the food was a little pricey for a street kitchen/cantene-type place. My plate of food was 40,000 IDR, which rivals the cost of fancier restaurants that I've been to in Java.
Nevertheless, I would likely return here if I was in the area again!

Important note regarding directions: on Google Maps, the restaurant looks as though it should be on the street/alley named Kemenangan, but this is not so! There is an alley directly west of Kemenangan (named Gang Tian Liong). Follow the fruit markets to the "Vegetarian" sign on the food cart out front! :-)

A Chinatown Vegan Goldmine - Edit

We stubled upon this gem in Chinatown by accident, and we were not disappointed. There is a glass case out front with the dialy dishes. Each day there are about 10-12 dishes to choose from. You can choose as many or as few as you want. The mock meats are some of the best that I've ever tried. We were so excited to find vegan satay, not to mention the other Indonesian/Chinese dishes. The Chinese 'sausage' and 'pork' had such a great smokiness about them. The owner's wife makes them daily. When they run out of food they close, so make sure to get there early. They are open from 8:30-5:00 (unless they run out of food). The owner is very friendly and happy to tell you about the dishes. Our only disappointment is that we didn't find it our first day in Jakarta.
