Small vegan restaurant in Chinatown on a crowded alley way. Menu changes, except for a few staples, such as mock pork, mock beef patty, satay, and local greens. Owner will explain what each dish is and how it is made. No gluten used in the making of the mock meats. Directions: From Glodok bus station, walk north on Jl Pintu Besar Selatan (toward Kota bus station), turn left at Jl Pancoran and walk down street for a couple of minutes, chinatown will be on your left, there are 2 alleyways that are part of Chinatown, turn left at the 2nd alleyway (the more narrow one), about halfway down the alley on the left. On the food display case at the front of the restaurant, it says vegetarian in big red letters. Open Tue-Sun 8:00am-3:00pm. Closed Monday.

Handi Vegetarian - Edit
I found this place over 1-2 years ago while searching for vegan spots in the Glodok area on Google Maps. Seeing all the great reviews, I was interested in checking it out.
Read moreUnfortunately, it was around Chinese New Year, and the area was packed with visitors and vendors. Since I came by bike, I was a bit hesitant to enter a crowded place while carrying my bike.
Time passed, and after maybe two years of knowing about this place, I finally came to try the food at Handi Vegetarian today. 😋
The food served is a buffet of Indonesian Chinese dishes. There are about 15 different options to choose from. I was a bit confused about what to pick, but I ended up going with charsiu, stir-fried mushrooms, and sautéed bok choy. The taste really suits my palate. The prices are still reasonable for Jakarta.
Bapak Handi, the owner, is very friendly and communicative. This is one of the reasons I’d love to visit again someday. Of course, another reason is to try more of the other tasty dishes they offer.
Wishing Pak Handi and his family health, success, and happiness always.
If the Universe allows, I’ll definitely come back.

Nice experience - Edit
Going to “the vegetarian restaurant” in Chinatown is not just about eating the best vegan food in town. The owner is so kind an also explained me interesting things about Jakarta. His family is all vegan and is his wife who normally prepares the food. The plate consists on what is available that day, in my case a beet and carrot soup with mock meatballs, and a mix of vegetables, rice, mock homemade meat (made of mushrooms). Everything delicious. The textures were surprisingly good.

Delicious - Edit
Really tasty food, we had a taste of everything and it was all delicious! A mix of Indonesian and Chinese food at a good price. If you are struggling to find it the location on Google is pretty accurate, there is a sign that says "VEGETARIAN" at the front. The owner is really nice and gave us recommendations for the rest of our trip 😊

DELICIOUS VEGAN RESTAURANT - Edit
So many different choices but not your regular dishes made just with tofu. We tried all of them between the two of us with ingredients varying from seitan, mushrooms, tofu and many others. The owner is super friendly and helped us with the choices because it can be quite intimidating especially because it was our first time trying Indonesian food so we were not sure on the best choice.

Amazing vegan food! - Edit
What an absolute find this place was! Tucked away in the markets of Chinatown, this absolute legend Handi is pumping out awesome vegan fare! I was in Jakarta for 5 days and I went there every day for my fix. Such amazing hospitality too. He was throwing vegan suggestions my way for all the places I'm going and absolutely happy to have a chat. There's a rotating selection of different creative mock meat and vege dishes and oh my gosh that rendang was insane.

Pros: Deliciousness., Handi is an absolute legend., Price.
Cons: My stomach wasn't bigger., I don't know how to make rendang that good., Handi isn't in Melbourne.

Excellent vegan food at a great price - Edit
Came here just before Chinese New Year. I wish I had found it earlier, so I could have gone again before they closed for the holiday.
Read moreThe shop is small, located down a narrow and crowded alleyway. It can be a bit hard to spot as the press of people move you along. It's on your left coming up from Pancoran, the main road. Look for the word "Vegetarian".
As it standard for Chinese veg places, it's set up with a bunch of dishes ready to go, and you take your pick of them as they dish them out. The owner is very enthusiastic and friendly, and was happy to explain each dish in fluent English. He also confirmed that everything was vegan, which was nice. As I ate in, a food tour passed by, and he gave animated explanations of the food to the group. He seems to be quite passionate about his work.
I got a big plate at a very good price (as the owner will tell you, he's upfront about his prices). I was also given a complimentary cup of tea. The food was quite good on a large serving of rice, and had a nice variety of veg and mock meat. Red mock pork and satay skewers were a personal favorite. Filling and delicious.
Would recommend anybody visiting Jakarta to drop by for lunch.

Delicious food from a passionate business owner - Edit
The food is amazing. They are so passionate with how they create their food! So much thought goes into every dish. The restaurant was closed as he had a busy day and had sold out of most things, but he saw us lost in China Town and ushered us in and prepared us a meal even though he was closed. We tried a couple dishes of what he had left over and explained to us how he makes everything.
