Seemed vegan to me.

Great food with upscale dining experience. Prices were on the higher side compared to most other places but you also pay for excellent service and ambiance. No alcohol served, fyi. On Wechat app this restaurant is marked fully vegan.

Mind-blowing food

We were surprised with the amount of options available on the menu, and no need say the food was over the top, well cooked, attention to details. Additionally the place was impeccable and very clean. Staff was great.

Pros: All the dishes ordered , Staff professionalism , Cleanliness

Local food... But veg!

A place in Shanghai where you can find vegan and vegetarian local food. Personally I don't love vegan meat but it makes sense to use it if the goal is to recreate the original flavor. Vermicelli with vegetables was very good and spicy, which I liked! A place to try if you are in Shanghai.

Pros: Big menu, Place and staff very nice, Very clean toilet

Chinese classics as vegan dishes

I really loved all the dishes as they brought back childhood memories for me, very traditional Chinese cooking. I didn’t expect to be able to have some of these dishes after I turned vegan and this place just made me happy.

Pros: Amazing food, Nice atmosphere, Good portions

Take Away

I've been to other branches and this one is near West Nanging Road so I ordered take away. I only had the spring rolls & an aubergine, potato & peppers dish which was a little oily but the app I used didn't have an option for boiled rice? The spring rolls were crisp, fresh & tasty. #Veganuary

Pros: Good vegan options, Nice interior

Vegan Chinese

We went here twice and the food was excellent. Highly recommend this place. Some dishes can be a little bit on the oily side. However, this can be avoided by choosing carefully. I think they had descriptions of dishes there, so if u pay attention to what you order you won’t end up with an entirely unfortunate oily order. Staff is very nice and speaks enough English to get by.

Definitely my most favorite vegan Chinese style restaurant

My title says it all. The food is really really good, they are being very creative with the dishes and you can really feel their efforts and the amount of time they put into it to make the dishes feel as much as possible like "the real thing". It's 1 minute walk from my office so I eat here almost every day. If you come at lunch, ask for the lunch set, for 58 rmb you will get a whole lunch with a variety of different dishes.

Passable vegetarian restaurant

Despite being one of the top-rated vegetarian restaurants and highly recommended by Lonely Planet, I personally find the food to be mediocre. It was not as though it tasted bad, but we were just not quite acquainted with this taste even as a vegetarian. I certainly would not highly recommend this eatery, but it might be quite worth trying it for the first time. The overall experience was just fine.

As we were near famished when we visited this vegetarian restaurant at around 8:30pm after our trip from Oriental Pearl Tower, we made the gross mistake of over-ordering. Coupled with the unappetising food, we had a hard time forcing ourselves finishing this extravagantly-priced food. The service is generally acceptable, depending on which waiter/waitress you received. The restaurant is located at the heart of Nanjing West Road station, just beside Majestic Theater building, and its size is large enough to probably accommodate 30 people. We saw a cat in their kitchen at the second floor after I came out from their toilet. Hopefully, the restaurant is hygienic enough!

Pros: Closed at 10pm

Cons: Slightly pricey

Great Chinese food

One of our favourite Chinese restaurants in Shanghai. Huge selection of food, very flavoursome and great staff. The kungpow chicken and noodles are always great. Definitely worth a visit.

Very good restaurant chain

We have eaten in two of the chain in Shanghai - the menus were the same and so was the quality of the food which was really good.

One or two of the dishes were a little greasy but that is being very picky.

Very happy to recommend this chain for good quality and consistency.

Pros: vegan with a good range of dishes, prices are very reasonable, dishes have English names

Cons: finding English speaking staff is a matter of luck, both sites we went to were difficult to find, Close quite early

This restaurant is great if you love fake meat, they have lots of it. However, I’ve visited this location a few times the last two years and am never excited about my food. I recently had the twisted BBQ tofu (which was a bit sweet for me) and a square of something white and green (the green being mushed peas, the white being ???), which was interesting, but not my cup of tea. My hotel is a block away from this place and I haven’t bothered to come back a second time during this stay despite it being super convenient. It’s just OK for someone who is not a fake meat lover.

Okay but not exciting

I ordered the Shanghai style pork and was surprised by its naturalistic consistency. The five pieces were rather large, but half of them were made of some kind of artificial fat and skin imitation that made me feel rather nauseous, so I only ate the "meat" parts.
I also had one piece of nori wrap with lettuce and some kind of vegan sausage filling. It was rather peculiar, and the menu showed 3 pieces, not just one - so I think the price is rather high for this side.

However, I appreciate that there were 3 kinds of vegan snacks while waiting for my dishes (seaweed salad, roasted peanuts with crispy seaweed and fresh watermelon) and free hot lemon water.

The interior is kind of nice and chic. There were some people having proper formal dinners on a night out as well as some locals eating while watching their phones.

Overall, I paid around 80 RMB, but I did not leave full.

Pros: Big variety, Menu with pictures, Free snacks and hot lemon water

Cons: Moody staff, Pricey, Menu does not point out vegan options

Mock meat and english menu

Delicious! They even give small snacks (see pictures) and watermelon for waiting. Everything was really good and waitresses did their best to serve you in English. They seems to have sort of lunch option but not sure if vegan. Menu was very long and everything sounded really good. Enjoyed myself!

Pros: Lots of options

Amazing

A book of options - literally took me half an hour to read the menu! Sooo much to choose from and such a luxury to be able to eat Chinese food after 5 months of living here! They have loads of different fake meats but also lots of dishes which are just natural without any fake meat. Decent prices.

Pros: Very nice area, Huge choice range

Lovely food, nice staff, a little expensive

The food was delicious, I went here to celebrate my birthday with my family who are meat eaters. We ordered a lot of food but every plate was finished, my family thought it was delicious and they liked the fake meat. The prices are a little higher than other Shanghai options, this was fine for us because we were looking for somewhere a little fancier as a birthday treat. The staff were very polite, they were very brief with us as they didn't speak English, the menu has English translations and photos.

Pros: Lots of options, delicious food, English menu.

Cons: A bit more expensive than other places nearby.

The curry is awful

We went here after I had food poisoning and my tastebuds really wanted something else than Chinese food. We got both the curries and where left with Chinese-tasting curry and no rice. The local food may be better here though.

Some people in the staff is quite unfriendly too and speak little English.

Delicious and close to hotels

If you are staying at or near the St. Regis (e.g. work travel) then you absolutely need to walk the block and a half to this restaurant. The menu is large enough that you could eat here for a few weeks without repeating an item.

VEGAN

Go here! Oh my gosh this is some of the best vegan food I’ve ever had. The menu is so extensive with more options than most restaurants. You can either order the smaller cheaper dishes which we did for a later lunch - or you can order fuller meals for dinner.

Everything we had was delicious. It’s a very nice restaurant and the interior is beautiful. We had the spicy noodles which were amazing, wontons and the sweet potato bake with vegan cheese.

Everything we ordered was delicious and I’ll ve going back for sure!

Pros: Extensive menu , Mock meat and vegetable dishes , Desserts and extensive drink menu

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere to it and it’s up stairs. Staff is friendly and the menu is in part English so if your Chinese is horrible it will be easier to order. Had the dumplings and orange chicken with rice. Very good and plenty for two. Came to 256 Yuan/$36. Definitely going back.

Pros: Friendly staff, Decent prices

Mock meat heaven - traditional Chinese

Zao Zi Shu is the best restaurant to not only try out traditional Chinese dishes in their vegan/vegetarian versions, but at the same time it was the perfect place to take my heavy-meat-eating Chinese friends to! Trying out mock meats for the first time was a great experience for them, especially by having typical Chinese meals that they were used to.

Pros: Good value & taste for money

Cons: Traditional heavy food
