A Bhavan-ly Feast - Edit
Dipping my toe into this international outfit for the first time, I was rather hopeful of great things. Slightly pricier than competing vendors within the city, I was expecting that this difference in cost would translate to a marked contrast in quality. In truth, there were flashes of pure brilliance interspersed with moments of relative mediocrity, though overall positives far outweighed the negatives.
Read moreIn the interest of moving swiftly on to better things, I’ll deal with lowlights upfront.
Firstly the clear soup. Essentially hot water with a smattering of chopped vegetables languishing at the bottom, the only real plus point to it was the fact that the portion was so small. The other letdown was the spring rolls. They were serviceable enough, but definitely not to the standard that I had yearned for.
Climbing the enjoyment scale slightly we come to the breads and bread-adjacent items. Nothing inherently wrong with any of them, but nothing particularly special either. At a push I would probably say that the rava dosa just pipped the onion tomato oothappam to lead this selection of sundries.
Then, from here on out, it was hit after glorious hit. The chana masala, though rather cardamom forward, was a fabulous combination of heat and heartiness, the ideal foil for the fantastic mushroom rice. Among the next gaggle of glorious goodies, there were some aesthetically interesting offerings, but their peculiar appearance certainly belied their excellence. Nigh-on impossible to split them, they all were pretty much majestic. However, there was one dish that truly surprised and delighted in equal measure, and stood out as a firm favourite: the idly fry. Right up there in the visually curious stakes, it was an absolute riot of textures and tastes which, after the first tentative bite, compelled me to inhale it in no-time flat.
So did it merit the extra expenditure? Absolutely. Save for those easily forgivable missteps, it was a wholly delicious undertaking, one that I would happily repeat.
