A Successful Operation - Edit
A word of advice, upfront: though I am sure it’s a given for most, please make sure you read their menu carefully. While there are indeed a substantial amount of vegan options, there are a few that one might assume are, but labelled allergens say different.
Read moreIt had been a few years since I had dabbled in the wares of this chain. From memory, it was always very good, and I genuinely can’t give you a viable reason as to why I neglected it for so long. Keen to rectify the situation, I duly ordered an obscene amount and got to work.
My initial selections didn’t quite get things off to the flying start that I hoped. The tabbouleh was rather lacklustre and the Arabic salad, while zingy and fresh, didn’t exactly rock my world. The vine leaves were a step in the right direction, but once again, nothing particularly remarkable.
It wasn’t until I delved deep into the bags and retrieved the falafels that things really started to get interesting. In terms of appearance, they were nought but your bog-standard bites. Upon tasting, however, they were far from ordinary. Incredibly light, yet crisp and moist, I immediately realised what a fool I’d been for only ordering four. The stuffed variety, too, were equally great, their filling giving them a real point of difference from their plain counterparts.
From the sublime, I ventured towards the ridiculous. The foul masri - a rather odd-looking concoction - took me by surprise in more ways than one. With its deeply earthy flavour, it was unlike any other variation I’d had before. Even as I write, I still can’t decide if I merely tolerated it or adored it…I’m going to go with latter!
Back on less speculative ground, the rest of meal was an outright triumph. The spicy potatoes and fries were near perfect, both the O.F sandwiches were tasty, hearty and satisfying, the chilli hummus was luscious and tangy, and the crispy pita provided a novel spin on a classic dish that wasn’t just a gimmick.
Still, I wrack my brain as to why it took so long to return to this brand, but following this experience, I know it definitely won’t be such a protracted break before my next engagement.
