Disappointing Portions; Limited Options

While visiting family in Wisconsin (we’re from Southern Illinois), I hopped on Happy Cow and decided to give Umi Sushi a try based on the positive reviews here. I was excited to bring my kids here as we love vegan sushi, and my niece was happy to indulge us with my choice of restaurant.

Our server wasn’t aware of the vegan options (and nothing is labeled as vegan on the menu) but was happy to check on everything for us. She confirmed that neither of the tempura options - neither the sweet potato tempura nor the vegetable tempura - were vegan and stated that it was the batter that made them non-vegan… not just the shared oil in which they’re fried. 🥺 The deep fried spring rolls aren’t vegan, either - likely egg in the wrappers. I just ordered the miso soup and edamame for appetizers. 😕 The edamame were good, and the portion was decent for sharing with my daughter and my grand-niece (my niece’s daughter). The miso soup had a good flavor, but there was barely any tofu in it (tofu bits were about the size of a lentil) and just a few small leaves/strands of seaweed.

For our main meal, my kids and I shared two different types of sushi and three orders of inari (two small, dry pieces per order). I ordered an avocado roll, an AAC roll (avocado, asparagus, and cucumber roll), and three orders of inari sushi. The rolls both seemed very small (thin), and the inari had maybe one large spoonful of rice in each pouch. (Our Kroger grocery store sushi chef always stuffs the pouches full, so this was very disappointing to find at a restaurant where you pay double for equivalent portions.)

Our non-vegan family members were equally disappointed with at least one of their selections. They ordered a kid’s portion of a dish that was supposed to be served with hibachi-style veggies, but it only had a bunch of onions and a few long, super thin shreds of carrot. Upon inquiring with the server, she asked her manager and brought out a small portion of broccoli to accompany the dish.

Definitely wouldn’t go here again or recommend unless it’s your only option given the day and time. 🙁

Great Vegan Options

They were able to make the agedashi tofu prepared vegan (no fish flakes), and the sweet potato tempura roll was good! They have vegan options specified for other noodle dishes and entrees as well.

Pros: Agedashi Tofu (no fish flakes), Sweet Potato Tempura Roll

Great service and vegan option

Umi has vegan vegetable hibachi with white rice, edamame, and several vegan sushi rolls, like tofu skin, vegetable nigiri, avocado, cucumber, Japanese pickled veggie, sweet potato tempura, vegetable tempura, rolls. (at one time they had a Buddha roll which is crushed peanut and avocado really good). There’s vegetable It’s a family owned business and they are very nice, always go the extra mile and will make sure your food is vegan if you communicate.
