I finally tried Twisted Soul

I’ve driven by this restaurant many times but never stopped. It’s walking distance to Vassar College so I’m sure most patrons are part of the college community. The interior is small with only a few tables and the food is all served in plastic containers with plastic utensils. I’m assuming that most of the orders are takeout. I got noodles with tofu that had some garnish all covered in sauce. I found the 3 hunks of tofu bland and a definite void in terms of vegetables. Still, overall it was tasty. I was left with a feeling about all of the plastic used and no option for recycling.

Pros: Tasty sauce

Cons: Served in plastic with no recycling option

The food was good. And there were numerous choices. Not the same old-same old.

Pros: # of choices, Portion size, Price

Unique restaurant

They have a lot of unique items and the menu clearly shows what is vegan. I like the Korean grilled tofu steamed buns!

Pros: lots of options

Mixed bag

Twisted Soul Concepts was a mixed-bag experience. You order at the counter and are notified via buzzer when your items are ready. Overall, the food was pretty tasty. Unfortunately, the negatives of the overall experience mostly outweighed the positive of the decent vegan food. In no particular order of importance, first, there is no customer bathroom accessible from the front of the restaurant; I went to the back of the building, entered the back door of the restaurant, and used the bathroom that way. I don't know if it was a customer bathroom but I used it anyway. Second, all the food-- both to stay and to-go meals -- was served in noncompostable plastic trays with noncompostable plastic cutlery. There were no recycling bins available. Third, the sister bakery across the street, Twisted Soul Desserts, did not carry any vegan items. Fourth, the way of identifying what is vegan on the menu is very confusing and inconsistent. Finally, most of the vegan items were simply a base (rice or noodles) with the same barbequed tofu added in instead of meat, so there was not much variety in terms of vegan options.

Pros: Food was pretty good, Staff was friendly

Cons: Food (to-stay, to-go) on noncompostable plastic, Vegan identification on menu confusing, Sister bakery doesn't carry vegan items

Deeply Disappointing

Twisted Soul could improve by…improving. The pricing is not inline with what they serve; the ratio of every other ingredient to plain white rice is wildly out of wack; and the food is poorly prepared and cooked. The grilled BBQ tofu rice bowl has 3 pieces of tofu, 3 pieces of plantain, and mostly rice. The tofu is barely cooked then has sauce thrown on to mimic barbecue. I’m sure they survive on college folks looking to try a place with vegan options in a town that doesn’t seem to have many options of note. Ultimately, this is a disservice to any attempt at convincing folks that vegan options and vegan food generally can be as good as non-vegan food.

Pros: They have vegan options

Cons: Expensive for what it is, A disservice to vegan food, Poorly prepared and cooked

Wasn’t Blown Away

The jerk tofu was bland and I was super disappointed, especially since I heard a lot of great things about this business, and it was a bit pricey.

Disappointing

I had such high expectations for Twisted Soul, and I was let down. We ordered the curry tofu and jerk tofu rice bowls and the grilled tofu steam buns. (We love tofu!) The tofu in all three dishes had no flavor or texture at all and tasted like it had been marinated in air and simply heated up.
This is the kind of vegan food that gives veganism a bad name.
I can’t speak for the non-veg dishes, but people rave about them.
It seems like a classic case of cooks putting only a fraction of the effort into the vegan dishes that they do into the non-veg dishes.
It didn’t feel like a good value for money, since the entrees were just a few pieces of (bland) tofu in a huge bowl of rice. Who wants to pay $12 for plain white rice?

Pros: Lots of options

Cons: Food is just not good , Expensive for quality

Hit the spot

The food here really exceeded our expectations. We had the Tofu Banh Mi and the Tofu Bad Ass Rice Bowl and we both really loved our meals. We are looking forward to going back and trying more dishes. They had a lot of vegan options.

We visited during the COVID-19 shut down so instead of eating inside, there is a park with benches both across the street and down the block past the traffic circle.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Different types of cuisine

good and fast lunch place

Several vegetarian and vegan options. The empanadas were small, served with vinaigrette salad dressing. The vegan (sweet potato) noodles with BBQ tofu was large and filling. Nice banana smoothie. Or, choose your own salad combinations, stuffed sweet potatoes. Mostly takeout, with two small tables. Not gourmet, but a very serviceable lunch-on-the-go, where you order at the counter.
