Serves meat, vegan options available. Japanese name トンタン. Vegetarian food and fish. Home style cooking with natural ingredients. Reported closed, Feb 2017.
Tom Tam's vegan set was generous, with two cold tofu appetizers, a bowl of mild white miso soup filled with vegetables, and also a lovely platter of pickled, roasted, sautéed veggies with different tastes, ranging from spicy, to marinated to slightly sweet. Veggies included mushrooms, burdock, sweet potato , devil's tongue , spinach, onion, other greens. The owner-chef is charming, speaks some English and understands veganism. We arrived after 2:30 PM and there was no problem ordering and being served a full lunch. I would recommend this restaurant for day-trippers or those staying longer in Kamakura. It's close to the main rail station & worth a trip !
Location: on Komachi, the pedestrian shopping street, below Osteria restaurant , on the ground floor in the back. There's a small sign in English & one in Hiragana outside, but more noticeable are bigger signs for "Magic Ana, " another restaurant in the same building . This is across from the Brasserie & patisserie.
Bonus: Kamakura tourist information center in the main JR station provides a "Vege-Kamakura " map. That makes finding things much easier. Updated from previous review on Thursday October 29, 2015
This was one of the top restaurants and definitely worth a visit if you are in Kamakura. The fact that they serve fish as well as vegetarian food does not mean that the vegetarian menu is smaller or any less thought is put into the menu. The staff is very helpful and will make sure you walk away with a full stomach and a smile.
