"Vegan"

Firstly, beware of vegan options on the menu, they state the substitutes are vegan but often forget to "substitute" for vegan meat.

When ordering vegetarian/vegan food we hope for our own sake that we can trust the establishment making the food to comply with what they state it will be. Unfortunately, The Union Market does not deliver this comfort. I have personally given The Union Market 2 chances to deliver a vegetarian dish for me and my significant other, each visit ranged from 40 dollars and only consisted of 2 lattes and a dish each. Most recently we received our breakfast sandwich with our "vegan" bacon on it, and our eggs, french toast, vegan bacon, and real sausage. Unfortunately, I didn't notice there was real bacon on my sandwich until after eating it.

Lastly, the girl at the counter is very kind, and the establishment is nice. It's a shame because our area does need restaurants that are trying to accommodate vegetarians, but unfortunately, a BBQ brisket grille is more trustworthy for vegetarian options

Pros: Clean, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Vegan options are NOT vegan, Expensive

Friendly vibes, Great food

Thrifty lil place with friendly staff. I asked the guy at the front what the best vegan option was and he quickly answered "Vegan weezerito. Next question."

I put my faith in the friendly man who complimented both my hat and my hoodie, and went for it.

The burrito was amazing. Yum yum in my tum tum.

It was also so great to see an lgbtq friendly place in an area that feels somewhat unwelcoming to me. It was a breath of fresh air.

Don't listen to the dude who rated this place 2 stars. Idk what's wrong with him. Maybe his wife cheated on him or something the day before...

Awesome spot!

My partner and I (both vegan) stopped by for breakfast on our way home from AC and we’re super happy we found this place. Both of our meals: the pixie and the green day, were delicious and we added on a bagel with vegan cream cheese because why not?! We also bought a bunch of baked goods (some vegan, some not) for our neighbor and they were, in her words, “fabulous”.

The staff were very friendly and the place itself is very cute. We want to plan more trips down to South Jersey just so we have an excuse to stop by Union Market! We will definitely be returning!!

One of the best options in Tuckerton

The star of the show when it comes to their vegan items are definitely their breakfast items (I especially like the Green Day bowl and the vegan Nirvana on a bagel), but they also have vegan lunch items and pastries, and most of their drinks can be made vegan as well. My one singular complaint is that all the vegan items (including non-dairy milks for drinks) are an upcharge, which is understandable.

Pros: Many vegan options, Coffee ☕️😋, Juices and smoothies

Cons: Upcharge for vegan options, Can get very busy

A super nice little café, great place to stop for lunch.

Four stars. This is a super nice artsy café with lots of grab-and-go desserts, snacks, pastries, and even fresh bread.

They have many more vegan options than the description lets on, with interesting and fun choices, but the menu was difficult to read. There's a note at the bottom that 'almost everything can be veganized and there might be an upcharge'. Some menu items explicitly say they can be made vegan and list a price, but most don't specify. Confusing to have both. An asterisk or a V for clarity would've been really helpful!

That being said, I asked if I could veganize the Bohemian Wrapsody - their take on a crunchwrap supreme - and the staff was super accommodating, swapping the dairy for substitutes. It was delicious! I haven't had anything like that in a while. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area again.

Pros: delicious, accommodating and knowledgeable staff, interesting menu that isn't trying too hard, nice atmosphere with good music, a great spot

Cons: would've liked clarity about what can be veganized, prepackaged stuff doesn't list ingredients

Cozy casual spot

Had vegan bagel sandwich & coffee. Every breakfast entree had a vegan option and the staff could clearly explain the options. Vegan banana and pumpkin and corn breads but the other pasties not vegan.

Pros: Multiple vegan breakfast options!

Cons: Coffee not hot; self service canisters.

Hit or Miss

They have a few vegan food options which is great being in a small south jersey town however they charge extra to “veganize” the food and have more than once disregarded the vegan request and served us eggs instead of tofu.

Serving us non-vegan food when we clearly asked for it to be vegan might just be a miscommunication between the server and cooks but the fact that it happened more than once tells me that they don’t truly appreciate or emphasize the importance of food requests which is concerning especially since these are listed on the menu as options.

Secondly the fact that they charge additional money for veganizing dishes and coffee is ridiculous.

Another note is they name some of their dishes after hard core bands, which is fine, no complaints there. But how can you have a “Chicken Cro Mags” which is CHICKEN salad on a croissant when John Joseph, the Cro Mags founder and front man is a hardcore militant vegan and would never stand by this. Poor form Union Market.

My gut feeling is they are trying to cash in on the vegan trend and that they don’t care one bit about veganism or vegans. Which as a business model is fine but we also get to choose where and how to spend our money and support companies that have values aligned with our own.

Hi Jay! It's been a while since you've been in & we have missed you! And thanks for the detailed review - we really appreciate customer feedback.

In speaking with our staff almost nine months after one of the orders in question, we vividly recall the oversight, as well as the phone call & replacing the items. We know it's inconvenient to have to return to fix a "To Go" order, but we always do our best to make good on these unfortunate occurrences.

We do appreciate / emphasize the importance of food requests, and wouldn't offer them as options if we didn't. As amazing as our staff is, we can't avoid human error 100% of the time & we apologize that you had two poor experiences in your dozens of visits.

In response to our need to charge additional money for veganizing, the simple fact is that nonmeat & nondairy products are more expensive than their counterparts. Menu prices are based on simple economics, not on the distinction of vegan/vegetarian.

All of our dishes are named after bands or songs. Some names make immediate sense, some are in pure fun, others are completely ironic. We are aware of John Joseph's veganism. We considered naming this particular sandwich "Meat Is For..." since it was our only meat-focused item on the menu at the time, but decided the majority of our demographic probably wouldn't be amused. If we were to get a call from the man himself regarding his complete disdain for the irony, we would gladly reconsider its moniker.

When we first opened The Union in August 2017, we had a fully vegan kitchen as part of the cooperative, and sadly, it was not a viable business model for the individual in charge. When we took over the kitchen in March 2018, we decided to build a menu that we were proud of and one that could feed herbivores, omnivores & carnivores alike. We did not do this to "cash in" on the trend - we did this to be more inclusive and to continue to provide fresh, homemade options to a diverse community of eaters.

It is absolutely your choice on where & how to spend your money, and we do hope to see you again soon as we are certain that our values are more aligned than you may think. If not, Living On The Veg is our absolute favorite vegan joint in the area, and we would suggest that you take a trip to Haven Beach if you haven't already. And please tell Rob & Lauren we said hi!
