A mixed experience but the food was quite good

The station café in Richmond was quite full when we arrived, (around 12:30) but we had reserved a table and it was very nice spot, in the old railway station building. They also have an excellent bakery, an ice cream shop, brewery and a cinema in the same building. The only problem came when we ordered our food and the member of staff warned us the courgette fritters (marked vegetarian) weren’t vegan. We thought she was going to say because they had used egg, but she said that they couldn’t guarantee there hadn’t been any cross contamination during the frying process. So I inquired what with and she replied with the example of something like fish! And then, a little shocked, I tried to point out to her that if there had been any cross contamination of that sort, they could not mark them as vegetarian, never mind vegan, nor the chips either? But However, after that the food was very delicious, though it did take a longer time than expected to arrive. There is a good menu, with a good selection of interesting vegetarian options, but nothing marked vegan. I believe they had a “can be made dairy free” thing going on. So apart from the fact that I am now a little concerned that their halloumi cheese (in my roasted Mediterranean vegetable sandwich) may not have been vegetarian either, it was a good lunch out but next time I would definitely try a different place.

Pros: Nice atmosphere and location , Interesting selection of vegetarian options , Probably very good for flexitarians or meat eaters

Cons: Put off a bit by concerns about cross contaminatio, Limited vegan options, not clearly marked

Shame about our waitress

We went there for breakfast, we’re greeted and seated quickly and had our order taken too. All came quickly and the vegan breakfast was fine, decent value for money, not amazing quality or taste but fine. Our little girl spilled her water on the floor and when we made the waitress aware so that no one would slip she said ‘yeah I can see that’, stopped speaking to us and sulkily mopped up the water. Not cool! The space is really lovely with a few cute shops and brewery to look at and an art gallery upstairs. Like I said, shame about that moody young lady.

Pros: A few decent vegan options, Rest of the building / site is fun to explore

Cons: One moody waitress

Lovely place

We go to The Station often for a vegan coffee, or to go to the cinema. They have an art gallery and (non-vegan) ice cream place - would be cool if they started selling plant-based ice creams! It's a really nice atmosphere and they offer a fully vegan breakfast, which is amazing. The coffees are great, and the kids linguine is nice too. Both the chunky and skinny chips are actually super good, I would highly recommend those. The vegan loaded nachos do have a lot of vegan cheese on them (Violife I think it was) so if you're not too keen on a lot of vegan cheese, you can ask for it without.

Pros: good value, great vegan options

Cons: serves meat + dairy
