Served dairy cheese on a “plant-based” pizza - Edit
We visited Stable Pizza during our trip to Winchester. As tourists, we found the restaurant through HappyCow because it offered several plant-based pizzas. Since we are a vegan family, we made a point of asking several times to make sure the pizzas were completely vegan. We know we may seem overly cautious, but that’s exactly how we try to avoid situations like this. Each time, we were assured there was absolutely no problem.
Read moreWhen the pizzas arrived, the cheese on one of them immediately looked suspicious. It looked exactly like the dairy mozzarella we remembered from before becoming vegan. My daughter, my husband and I each took a small bite, and it was immediately obvious from both the taste and the way the cheese stretched that it was dairy mozzarella. We stopped eating straight away and informed the staff.
The staff member who had served us went upstairs to the kitchen, and we were left waiting for at least 15 minutes with no explanation. Eventually, another member of staff came down to apologise and confirmed that they had made a mistake: the pizza was not vegan.
This is about much more than the distress of unknowingly eating an animal product against our ethical beliefs. Had we been customers with a milk allergy, the consequences could have been far more serious. On top of that, after years without consuming dairy, we felt unwell later that day and, above all, deeply disgusted and disappointed.
Not charging us for the meal does not make up for an error of this magnitude. If a restaurant advertises plant-based options, it has a responsibility to ensure that the food it serves is actually vegan. After repeatedly confirming that our pizzas were completely vegan, it is unacceptable that we were served one topped with dairy cheese. As tourists, we trusted both the information on HappyCow and the assurances given by the staff. We sincerely hope Stable Pizza reviews its procedures to ensure this never happens to anyone else.

2 or 3 vegan pizza options on the menu. I had the " Over the veg" pizza which was, to my taste, excellent. Thin crust, crispy pizza with generous amount of toppings.

The service was quick ( we were there off-peak time) and friendly.
Sadly terrible music playlist (in my subjective opinion of course) detracted from our enjoyment somewhat. The staff said it comes from head office and they can't change it 😲

The pizzas are good—they're large and thin. We ordered the Over the Veg and the Goat. We also ordered the Aioli Wanna Be With You Stable Tots and the Vegan Chocolate Brownie for dessert.

One of the waitresses was super friendly, but another was very rude and gave us a dirty look and couldn't answer any of our questions about the vegan dishes on their menu.

I had the vegan 'Viva la veg' pizza. Very tasty and it had fresh rocket on top. I also drizzled garlic oil on it. I would definitely eat there again. Very friendly staff.

Came here for dinner and had a great experience. Have not been since before Covid and it was just as good as I remembered. Food is good quality, I had the Vegan Margherita with Olives and Mushrooms, and the Vegan Brownie which were both great. Service was lovely and staff were helpful with ordering and suggestions. Would definitely visit again!

Stylish, modern decor sets the tone for this way above average pizza restaurant. The plant based options are clearly marked and plentiful.
Read moreI had the Cajun potato tots which were crispy with a beautifully spiced Cajun mayo. The jackfruit pepperoni pizza had a light, thin base cooked to perfection. The vegan cheese was very good with sweet overtones. The pepperoni was tasty and a few more extra pieces would have been welcome. The coleslaw was spot on, thick with mayo and crunchy textures. The vegan chocolate brownie was more cake like than brownie, but still flavoursome and set off well with the vegan vanilla ice cream.
There is also a good selection of beers snd cider. It would be good to see those marked as to which are vegan to save having to look each one up on the internet. I went for a mango cider which was very sweet but quite drinkable, especially when chilled with ice.
Very nice surroundings of old Winchester around the restaurant, recommended.

Lots of vegan options 🌱 - Edit
The Stable has a separate vegan menu with many options including starters, mains, sides and dessert! The pizzas are really delicious and the salads are exciting (no boring iceburg here!). They use Bute Island vegan cheese which is really nice on their crispy pizza bases. They also have a brilliant app that you can use to save queuing up to order. The app is user-friendly and first time use gives you a discount on your meal!

Went here for vegan pizza and it was honestly delicious. They put a great amount of vegan cheese on it and all the toppings work well together. A great place to bring omni friends so they can see how delicious vegan food can be! Would recommend and loved it.
