Nice eco shop and cafe - Edit
The cafe is a nice light and airy space with spaces for eating in, alongside zero waste food and gifts you can buy (the refills are well priced). The food is reasonably priced. On our first visit we got a Dahl bowl & a flatbread & lattes. The don’t charge extra for oat milk (although they do for coconut and soy milks). They sell milk, eggs and ice cream & they seem quite dairy heavy in this regard which is a shame. Most of the cakes were vegan and the soups of the day were too. They gave us non vegan butter with the vegan dahl so specify when ordering even if it’s listed as vegan. Food tasted good although it needed seasoning as a bit bland.
Read moreOn our second visit we got the shakshuka (sweet, nice though not really a shakshuka) & a haggis toastie (came with a cheese that was way too strong for me but partner liked it). Mochas lovely (nice caramel taste to it). Most of the cakes/sweet things were vegan (not pastries). Got a lemon whoopie pie which was good
Update: been back many times since, mainly for their refillable shopping but also sometimes for lunch/cake. Increased prices a bit recently. Would like a wider menu although have liked their specials which give a bit more variety

Very popular and nice place - Edit
Very popular and busy vegetarian cafe, with an eco refill shop (food, cleaning products etc), and other no-plastic household items.
Read moreCafe has a good selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, and good value soup. Two soups when I went, and mine (curried squash) was lovely, with sourdough bread. About 5 different vegan cakes. Lots of hot and cold drink options.
Also, the first time I have ever seen homemade cloth napkins brought with the food - more work for them washing etc, but much better than throwaway things.
Pleasant staff, relaxed atmosphere and busy all the time even on a cold Monday in November. If you want to be sure of a table to eat best to reserve. We went for tea and cake first, then reserved a table for later for lunch. Nice log burner keeps the place warm!
Pros: Fully vegetarian, Good range of options, Relaxed atmosphere

Nice but unadventurous food - Edit
Food was nice but not loads of choices, soups, sandwiches and cakes.
Read moreDisappointed at the extra charge for plant milk. When I questioned it I was told it was normal. Actually it isn't normal at vegetarian cafes in my experience and even at many non veggie places it's thankfully becoming a thing of the past.
As this place claims to be all about the environment (indeed there is a nice little eco shop) it seems odd to discourage people from choosing plant milks and I see they are selling raw farm milk to further encourage dairy consumption.
I guess it's just easy to tell the difference between a veggie place that would like to be vegan and one that puts on some options for the vegans and this is the latter. Quite a few vegan cakes but no scones and didn't have our first choice of soup either and it wasn't even 1pm.
What we had was nice enough though the tea was far too strong and made my partner feel a bit sick (again they didn't have his first choice of tea).
I felt similar when I ate there last year but of course not loads of veggie cafes around so thought I'd give it another try
Pros: Nice food
Cons: Not much choice and had run out of things, Extra charge for plant milk, Bit noisy but it was Saturday lunchtime

When we’ve been they’ve charged extra for coconut and soy milk but not oat milk. Was that the same?

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that your visit didn’t quite hit the spot for you, especially as you chose to give us another try.
Read moreJust to offer a bit of insight into how we operate:
We’re a small vegetarian café with a mission to reduce packaging and food waste. While we do aim to keep our vegan range as extensive as possible, our menu is intentionally compact so we can cook everything fresh and keep food waste to a minimum. Saturdays can be particularly busy, so we do occasionally run out of certain soups or cakes - it’s never ideal, but reducing waste is a key part of our mission.
Regarding the plant milk charge, I completely understand your disappointment. Alternative milks are significantly more expensive for us to buy in than whole milk, and adding a small charge helps us keep our overall menu prices fair for everyone. We’re proud to be one of the more reasonably priced cafés in the area, and this approach helps us stay accessible for all of our customers.
On the topic of milk: the refill fridge you saw is actually part of our zero-waste shop. It allows our customers to top up their milk in reusable bottles rather than buying single-use containers - the aim there isn’t to encourage dairy, but rather to offer a lower-waste option for those who already buy it. We tried a similar approach to reduce the packaging of oat milk, by offering oat milk powder in the store, but sadly it didn’t prove popular.
We truly appreciate you highlighting what you enjoyed as well as what didn’t work for you. Feedback like this helps us keep improving while staying true to what The Highland Weigh is all about.
Thanks for visiting us, and I do hope we can welcome you back again.
Best wishes,
Sean

Very nice lunch place - Edit
Good vegan soups for lunch, with either sourdough bread or chickpea toastie. Plus several other alternatives we didn’t try but they also seemed to be good! Nice relaxed atmosphere as well!

Beautiful vegetarian cafe - Edit
I thought this was a great place - vegetarian, vegan, breakfast, lunch and brunch dishes are served in a nicely decorated (and large) cafe with an in-house eco/refill store. They do cakes, drinks, and light meals with special children’s options such as hummus or cheese toastie with fresh cubed veggies or carrot sticks (spinach and veg haggis cheese toastie adult version) But don’t quote me on any of that it was a week or so ago now! I had a Buddha bowl and honestly it was gorgeous, probably the best meal out I’ve had yet. One last thing: they had this pre-payed board so people could take a pre-payed receipt and get the food for it which I thought was lovely.

Cons: Clearly very popular so free seats are scarce!

Look out for the cakes labelled with a green heart which are all vegan. We tried the carrot cake, brownie and rocky road - all very tasty.
