Small independent vegan cafe - Edit
A charming small cafe between Hatfield and St Albans. A good spot for lunch with a choice of soup, quiche, salads and homous. Excellent provision for vegans with main dishes and extras including soya milk. The last review mentioned the wait... the cafe seems popular and they now have a second member of staff serving. When I went with a work colleagues today it was busy but service very prompt.

Amazing nut roast - Edit
Visited just after Christmas so when I saw the nut roast on their specials that day, I had to have some. One of the best nut roasts I'd had, with a succulent gravy (and also great veggies too). Would definitely want to visit again soon!

Lovely people, lovely food - my favourite place - Edit
I would almost live here given the opportunity. Fully vegan so I can eat/drink anything they have. As well as daily specials at lunchtime, there are regular cakes (yum!) and food, including a superb 'BLT'.
Read moreHeather also has a wide range of Vegan products, from chocolate, drinks and tinned goods. There is also weekly deliveries of fresh organic produce, such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, onions, etc. etc., so always worth dropping in to see what is there before you go to the supermarket (if you have to).
Heather and her staff are wonderful people and deserve your support.

Superb! - Edit
I adore this place and visit every time I’m in the area - beautiful friendly helpful staff, lovely peaceful atmosphere, the best vegan homemade cake I’ve had (the times I have been, cherry bakewell, carrot cake, cookies), devine coffee. I enjoy a full breakfast and had a burger once with homemade chips which was yum. Chilled and cosy setting

The Green Kitchen - Edit
I visited for lunch whilst in the area. Varied menu, although would be good to see more adventurous choices. I was looking for something light so had the BLT. Food was nice. I really liked the vegan provisions on sale, good range available and I came away with a few things I’d been yet to try. The vegan honea was delicious. Plenty of seating indoors and off road parking available.

I try to frequent the Green Kitchen when I'm visiting friends and family in the area. The cafe has a real community feel to it, with young and old all catered for.

Really nice people, ordered a tofu sandwich and a smoothie which tasted heavenly. Although the food on the menu is a little simple, it’s a great choice for a quick cheap lunch or snack, in a lovely airy setting.

Friendly and cosy. - Edit
It’s been my regular place to grab lunch while I was studying in the college nearby (was actually so excited there was a vegan place around because the college is far away from the centre of the town - which can be a downside for someone who doesn’t wanna travel too far). The staff have always been really friendly, food has always been good and affordable (would sometimes not have some items available but I didn’t mind), plus you can buy vegan products such as cosmetics, confectionery, dairy alternatives etc. It’s a quiet and a very friendly, homely place.

Friendly little café - Edit
Popped here about 2pm on a Thursday - there were a few menu items unavailable due to a busier than usual day (which is great to hear small businesses doing well!) so I couldn’t quite get what I was after. Nonetheless they rustled me up something and it was very tasty. Very friendly in there😄I hope next time I go they’ve got their burger left so I can give it a try!

Excellent Vegan Café - Edit
The Green Kitchen made for a very pleasant stop on a long car journey, thanks to the Happy Cow app. The food was tasty, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Even the pictures on the walls and the classic soul background music were perfectly to my taste, it's almost as if they knew I was coming! If I'm ever in the are again I'll be back. Keep up the good work.

I love going to The Green Kitchen and have bought lots of my family and friends there too! I love that I can ask for my food without certain bits or add things I'd like to have. Also great to be able to buy some vegan food bits to take home and cook with. Love the veggie straws and twighlight bars!

I visited The Green Kitchen with my vegan friends, and we all had a great experience. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. The vegan milkshakes were lovely and I would definitely recommend this café to other people - especially the meringues. All the food here is vegan, and there is a very cosy, family-friendly, friendly feeling and ethos about the place. Definitely give it a go x

Happy Vegan - Edit
I went along after endless recommendations from close friends and am so pleased to say, I was not at all disappointed.
Read moreI was nervous because I'm very allergic to both gluten and soy, so thought I may end up eating my usual jacket potato and beans... but I ended up pleasantly surprised!
The owner and staff are absolutely wonderful people. Courteous, polite, engaging, welcoming and easy to speak to.
I LOVED that their menu stated that if you didn't like a food, you could tell them and they'd happily make a swap rather than wasting it. It's such a good idea because so often you end up with just one item of food that you don't want, but this solved the problem completely.
I adored their ethics. Everything was sourced from completely ethical, independent vegan companies- no dodgy parent companies in sight!
The food was beautifully presented and tasted extremely homemade, healthy but very flavoursome! It was also given in a timely manner.
I loved how the napkins were 100% recycled, that there were metal straws and other such environmentally friendly items.
Everything for sale was fantastic. I ended up spending MUCH more than intended because they stocked so many unique and exciting vegan items. I also saw some of my favourite books which was random but made me smile.
Overall, the atmosphere was lovely, the food was tasty and everything was ethical, healthy and fairly priced. I can't fault it!
Side note: I loved the pictures on the walls of the animals. It was so pleasant to look at whilst I ate.
Pros: Delicious food, Engaging staff, Environmentally friendly
Cons: Not enough soy free food on the menu

One of my favourite places on Earth! - Edit
Living in St Albans I was initially grateful to have any vaguely veggie place open here - but it's become one of my favourite places to eat full stop. Great food, in a lovely space. You can do a decent vegan shop here also, loads of nice snacks and things for cooking. Love the smoothies, home made cakes and specials board also.

hello, thanks for the review on Happy Cow. I'm very pleased to say we stopped using cows milk when we re-opened after Christmas. ( so we are now 100% vegan) I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the golden milk when you visited. Please tell us when something isn't to your taste and we will make another or change it for something you do like.
