I still think about this place - Edit
We went there a few times, as the food was just way too delicious. The curry comes with dhal, different sambols, okra, pickled cucumber, pumpkin curry, sweet potato curry and beans. Best curry we had in Sri Lanka so far. You can also go for paratha instead of rice, which u would recommend, it’s just too good. The jackfruit samosas are also out of this world and the staff where so helpful and nice. Come early so you don’t have to wait for a seat, we’ve always been there before 6pm and got a nice table with a view. Later there’s a long line of people waiting to get seated but it’s worth the wait. Wish I had tried their Kottu as well, as it looked amazing

Best veggie curry ever! - Edit
Whilst nothing is explicitly labelled as vegan or vegetarian I did ask the waiter to clarify what is and he basically told me that all vegetable curries were vegan (there was obviously a language barrier and I was a bit sceptical the bread wasn’t but ignorance is bliss). Nevertheless, we had the poppadoms, samosas and the red bean stew and it was the most delicious veggie curry of my life! It was so good that we ate there again a couple of days later. It’s super busy and there’s always a queue unless you get there before 6.

If there’s a queue to be seated, it’s for a good reason. Food, ambience and staff are amazing. Worth the wait!

Racist Restaurants of Ella - Edit
I never imagined I would have to write a review like this in Sri Lanka, but my friends and I experienced unmistakable discrimination at two restaurants in Ella: THE CLAY POT and the one right beside it, PINIDIYA SPECIAL.
Read moreMy friends and I were just looking for LUNCH. Literally just lunch. We walked into The Clay Pot Hut because we’d seen mixed reviews about them “not welcoming brown people,” but we thought "come on, we’re in Sri Lanka, how true can that be?"
Turns out… very true.
The moment we walked up the stairs, the lady at the front took one look at us, stepped back, whispered to another waiter, and suddenly we get hit with:
“Do you have a reservation?”
It was baffling this was not peak lunch hour, and the place was half empty at 2.30pm. Despite asking if they could accommodate just three people, we were told “No, sorry,” with zero effort made.
Disappointed, we walked next door to Pinidiya Special, thinking it might have been a misunderstanding. The owner greeted us warmly and agreed immediately when I asked for a table for three. But the moment another staff member whispered into his ear after noticing that the three of us were brown women the story changed instantly:
“Oh sorry, the kitchen is closed.” This was at 2:35 PM with multiple empty tables and during actual lunchtime. How can the kitchen be closed all of a sudden when they first agreed to give us a table.
When I confronted them about the reviews online mentioning discrimination against brown or Indian guests, the staff literally said:
“We don’t discriminate… THEY do.”
Pointing at the very restaurant next door, yet doing the exact same thing to us.
It was honestly shocking, disappointing, and deeply unfair to be treated like this. We pay the same money, order the same food, and expect the same basic respect. Instead, both restaurants behaved as though they only wanted to serve white tourists, a colonial hangover that’s embarrassing at this point.
Thankfully, we walked just 20 seconds down the road to a place called MATEY HUT and the experience was the complete opposite. Warm hospitality, no nonsense, incredible food Highly recommend Matey Hut if you want an actual meal without being judged at the door.
And honestly, I’ll say this nicely but truthfully:
The same brown people who discriminate against their own will not get an ounce of respect in a white country. I don’t understand this colonial hangover or whitewashed behavior but it’s sad, and it needs to stop and its unnecessary, unkind

Leckerstes authentisches Essen!!! - Edit

Highly recommended - Edit
I don't understand why there are no reviews! The food here is really fantastic. The jackfruit samosas taste great. The rice with curry was excellent. Lots of curries and it tasted very fresh. The people who work there are super friendly and you sit in a quiet place with a view over the railway.
