Hot-Spot in Ella - Edit
Das Restaurant ist klein, aber sehr gut besucht. Dadurch längere Wartezeiten, um überhaupt einen Sitzplatz zu ergattern.

Delicious curries and friendly service - Edit
Matey Hut serves up some of the most delicious curries in Ella. The eggplant and dahl curries were absolutely fantastic. The service was sharp and friendly, making the whole dining experience delightful.

Lots of different veg curries to try - Edit
I really like this place because you can actually choose which vegetable curries you get, instead of having random ones, and they have a huge selection! The flavours are all so good and there’s a lot of variety between the curries. I found it more economical to get plain rice with papadam and then order the curries separately instead of getting the plate with 4 curries.

Many Curries Available to Choose From - Edit
The workers are friendly and can help in choosing vegan options. One can order rice with a choice of 4 curries, which let us try 12 different curries among the 3 of us. The taste was amazing, and the price was fair.

Curry is nice - Edit
Curry is nice and you can have few of them as part of one dish. Either I dont like kotthu or is bad there. Milk tea is ok. Roti with chocolate and banana is decent, a bit expensive though.

Amazing eggplant curry 🍆 - Edit
The eggplant curry is their self-proclaimed signature dish and tastes amazing. You can get 4 vegetarian/vegan curries of your choice, including rice, for ca. LKR 1.200,-

Super Local Eatery - Edit
This is the best Sri Lankan food we have had so far, they offer a lot of vegan options and the value is second to none (£3 for a sample dish of 4 curries with rice and a poppadom). Must visit when in Ella.

Food is tasty, nice staff. They also offer cooking classes and it’s really good (all dishes were vegan except fried banana but they adopt it for me).

Good - Edit
Good food and service. Sadly they had neither mango juice nor jackfruit curry… still great, but overall nothing special, had had better curries.

Not our best experience - Edit
We ordered the same dish twice. One came the other one was mixed up two times before it came.
Read moreYou sit outside right next to the train underpass which is a bottleneck, so you sit in the fumes of that traffic jam.
How did the food taste?
Out of four currys I‘d say one was good. The others were soso and the first portion came lukewarm close to cold.
The staff is nice.
Dishsize and price are on the touristy/expensive side.
We won’t go again.

Good food but somewhat overhyped - Edit
This place is great for local food. But it's nothing outstanding in terms of food, service or veganism. Their is no signation of veganism anywhere, and the staff doesn't understand the concept of veganism so you have to explicitly ask them about your animal product concerns. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place but you have many like this in sri lanka.

Tasty and good service - Edit
The food is amazing. Their simple green menu card is not clearly labeled vegan/vegetarian but everything here is cooked with coconut oil and not ghee (unless mentioned). There are many veggie options.
There are limited seatings so I recommend to go either early or later otherwise you may have to in a line. h

Sri Lanka food is very vegan friendly so it's the perfect place to do a cooking class! The class itself was very fast paced but the food was incredible! The eggplant curry and pumpkin curry was our favourite! Coconut roti is the best!

Excellent food, good price, friendly staff - Edit
I'd strongly recommend this place for anybody visiting Ella. Came back here several times while staying here. The menu isn't huge, but you've got plenty of selection on vegetarian dishes that are either already vegan or can be made so on request.
Read moreRice and curry is great, but my favorite was the kottu: best I had in Sri Lanka, especially with the homemade tomato sauce. Big portion and full taste. The staff was very friendly, and the prices are more than fair.
Note that it's all outdoors and there can be a few mosquitoes around, especially in the evening. It can also get a bit busy (it's not very big) so you may have to wait a little, but it's worth it.

Amazing food - Edit
Visited the place in December 2021. We ate here several times because the food was simply amazingly delicious, the prices were good and the staff was very nice. We tried out a few things: tomato soup, veggie soup, lady fingers okra, banana and chocolate rotti, and the plain/tissue parata with dhal was the star of the show.

When you order the veg curries you get a big plate with rice in the middle and four curries around it. They were all tasty, not too spicy. Prices are good and the man running the place was very friendly.
