Best vegan food in Amsterdam

This family restaurant (Japanese wife and Caribbean husband + four children) is in an area full of tourist traps. Judged by its decor, repetitive reggae playlist and informality (a very courteous child took my order the first time) I was skeptical of this place the first time I tried it. I usually don't trust places where menus have pictures of the food they sell. But that particular night I was extremely hungry so I didn't mind the pictures and I decided to order a tofu dish.

I was so glad I gave this place a chance. The food was outstanding, and by far the best vegan food I had in Amsterdam. I had four meals in total (two dinners and two lunches) and all of them were superb.

The food options are an eclectic mix of Japanese, Asian and Caribbean dishes (inspired by the owners' respective origins) + fake meat options, perhaps to cater the tourists. I tried those recommended by the owner and all were delicious. I loved the curry, the lentil soup, the crispy tempeh sushi, the fermented soybean bowl, the gyoza with rice and the tofu dishes with vegetables and rice. The green smoothy, and the coconut and survival cakes for dessert were delicious as well. I usually dislike fake meats, but the bite I tried of the fake chicken was perhaps the best I've ever had.

The bottom line of this place is that the food is very simple, however, it is so perfectly cooked and fresh that it simply tastes amazing. Just a couple of warnings, you will likely wait a long time to be served, especially if it is packed (usually over the weekends), since each dish is prepared from scratch. Food will not be cheap in spite of the rustic silverware and decor of the place. However, when you try it you will appreciate its freshness and seasoning that you won't mind the prices.

As the owner told me, "Amsterdam is an experimental city", and I agree. I'm sure that you will enhance your experimental experience in this city with the superb food that is served here.

Tasty lunch spot

Nice lunch spot. Good variety of food choices.
My wife got the Japanese pancake, and I got the vegan platter. The platter was the better of the two, but they were both good.
My only complaint was that they forgot about out drinks, and they did not arrive until our food was almost completed.

Interesting food options

All vegan menu with interesting food options. The food was very good.
The restaurant is small, so seating is limited. Since they have a semi-open kitchen, all of your clothes will smell of food afterwards 😅

Pros: Good food, Interesting choices, All vegan

Give this place a chance

Walked in and was sceptical, but actually had some of the tastiest whole food I’ve had in Amsterdam. Great lunch spot and I’m sure it’d be great for dinner too.

Vegan plates

There are a lot of nice options. I had the vegan plate and it was very tasty. Unfortunately the portion size was a bit small.

Top 3 Worldwide

Some of the best vegan food I’ve ever eaten out for ! Very refreshing and healthy (I got the ital vital plate) and the coconut milkshake was also amazing . Would highly recommend if you are looking for something a bit more healthy. Also very filling!

Our First Visit

We saw a fun video interviewing the owners of TerraZen on YouTube and so decided to go for dinner, on our first night in Amsterdam.

The decor is humble and a lil rough around the edges, but I usually appreciate this aesthetic as I feel these kinds of places tend to focus more on food than anything else.

Unfortunately it's not totally family friendly, as they didn't have high chairs for children, nor low down tables with enough space for a buggy, so we had to have our little one on our lap, which was a bit precarious as the seating is all high bar tables and stools.

We ordered gyoza, sweet potato fries, okinomiyaki, fried chicken with rice salad and chocolate cake to share.
The food was tasty but my husband wished the okinomiyaki to be thicker, as he left still hungry.
I really liked the fried chicken, although wished there was stronger seasoning coating it.
The chocolate cake was beautiful.

We want to visit again in summer and try out some of the other dishes.

Pros: Humble aesthetics, Chocolate Cake, Homemade Jamaican Ginger Beer

Cons: Seating - should be accessible to all

Legendary

I have great memories of the food I've ate here but it's been over ten years, so my memory has deceived me or my tastes have changed. I had the fried veg plate with rice, vegetables, battered chicken & tempeh. It was just good, not amazing, I wasn't feeling the love in the food but it could just be my expectation.

Delicious but lacking

It was a large menu so it was tough to decide what to get, however most things are a combination of rice, salad, veggies and protein. Very smelly of cooking oil as soon as you go in, which stays on your hair and clothes. Very long wait time for food and several items not available. Power went off at one point, seemed pretty chaotic. The food we finally managed to get was nice though!

Interesting: Japanese & Jamaican

All vegan, lots of options. More sitting space than expected from the photos. Healthy food. Friendly personnel. Art on the walls. Quiet tasty drinks as well. Maybe not the fastest kitchen, but great for relaxing and taking your time . Nearby Amsterdam Centraal. Toilet available.

Pros: Friendly atmosphere, Nearby centraal, Interesting menu options

Cons: Kitchen a little bit slow, Space for groups up to 12 but not much more

Good flavours and textures

Lots of options, tasty food. Loved the rice, milkshake, fries, Jamaican plate and the tonkatsu bowl. The okonomiyaki had a different structure than we are used to, but the flavour was good.

We keep coming back for the food and the mango lassie.

Delicious drinks and food

I have searched for nearly 6 years for a vegan okonomiyaki and finally found one here. It was a joy and my French partner thanked me for the experience as it was his first ever okonomiyaki. The green smoothie was yummy as was the mango lassi which was heavenly. The fresh mint tea was so welcome to rehydrate. I could happily have tried everything on the menu here.

So many options!

TerraZen has a pretty big menu, all vegan, and also pretty varied. I found it very hard to choose from, I think many of the dishes are similar, only the protein source varies, but I really really enjoyed what we both ordered.
The portions are just perfect: not too much, not too little.

It has a very chill, lowkey atmosphere that I also really liked.
Overall would come here again to try more dishes😄

Pros: Long, varied menu, Lowkey atmosphere, Super tasty

Hidden gem

Het eten is echt ongelofelijk goed en lekker. De sfeer is leuk maar de plek om te zitten niet zo comfortabel, niet echt om een avond met vrienden lang te tafelen, wel om echt HEEL erg lekker en authentiek te eten.

Pros: De Roti wraps, Geweldig eten, Origineel

Cons: Locatie is best lastig te bereiken, Weinig plek binnen, Niet zo comfortabel zitten

excellent options but pricy

Very nice place to eat your fill, many different choices, everything vegan, from full plates, rolls, burgers, soup, drinks, deserts! Tried a tempeh plate, very nice and filling. Bit expensive but worth the visit. I recommend it.

Pros: Tasty, Deserts!

Cons: Bit pricey

Unreal Japanese/Caribbean fusion

This is my favourite place I've been in Amsterdam, maybe in the world! The food is so fresh and interesting, not a boring bean burger or falafel wrap in sight! I had the spicy red bowl, which was sticky vegan chicken with a crunchy salad and rice. The portion was pretty big for the cost, particularly for this place's central location where everything is expensive! The waiter was also lovely, really friendly and made me feel comfortable as a solo female traveller. 10/10 can't wait to go back!

Pros: Fresh and interesting food, Friendly service and atmosphere, Good value for central Amsterdam

Cons: No alcohol

My favourite place to eat on the planet. The Japanese-Caribbean fusion food is so fresh and interesting. Every time I come to Amsterdam I make sure I come here, sometimes twice in the same trip. This time I tried the okonomiyaki and it was fantastic!

Update 12/10/25: I've been coming here for 9 years now and it's always been fantastic. The food was still lovely today, but the service wasn't as "enthusiastic" as I've experienced previously. Not quite the same welcoming atmosphere, unfortunately. Still really good, but today would have been a 4 star score, rather than the usual unequivocal 5.

Pros: Interesting Japanese-Caribbean fusion, Fresh

Cons: I wish they brought the communal table back!😄

Pros: Plato variado, Bastante saludable

Cons: Geschmack, Ambiente, Preis
