The Taiko Udon restaurant looks very modern, clean and bright. I really love the vegan tantan udon soup. It was so delicious. They have some vegan options and the staff is very friendly.

We came here last week unsure whether it had reopened. We were pleased to find the doors open and a table available for us. It was already quite full and they were turning people away (maybe because they had bookings later in the evening?) by the time our food arrived, so it's worth getting there before 6 if possible.
Read moreThere was a separate English menu accessible from the QR code on the table (pictures attached), which made things really clear. We had the vegan udon in hot soup broth, which was really simple but completely delicious. The noodles were so long and chewy - just perfect.

I ordered the soy milk ramen, it was a lil spicy and full of flavour. Reminded me of Ts tan tan.
I also got to try the sweet tofu and udon which had the most incredible broth, I don’t know how they do it 🤤

Tasty Udon Soup - Edit
Visited Taiko in hope that they were open after reading they went on a hiatus. They have a very easy ordering system you do from your phone especially if you don’t know Japanese. There was a vegan ramen section and I ordered the udon soup. The flavor of the broth was very subtle but it was yummy and warm for a cool day. It made for a filling lunch!

I went here for udon, which I love and cannot get enough of. They have an entire vegan section of the menu with lots of options. I also ordered vegan tempura and my husband had vegan dandan noodles. All excellent. Excellent service. Easy to find.

I like that it specifically says vegan - in Japan a lot of menus are not so clear about that. And there is quite a lot of options and not only one, like in most restaurants I’ve been in.

Fantastic Udon - Edit
I have been living in Japan for about two and a half years, and it’s hard to believe, but this was my first vegan udon outside of home. They have a digital menu with the veg options clearly marked. The broth for the vegan udon is entirely plant-based, and you can easily remove the egg from the few vegetarian options to make those fully vegan too. The staff was so friendly and kind and told us that they have plans to make the menu even more vegan friendly! I had the Kitsune Udon, and my husband had the Yamakake Udon without egg. They were both excellent! We hope that we can stop by again during this short trip to Hiroshima and try some of their other vegan dishes!
Read moreUpdate: We went back the next day again and had the tantan udon with soymilk and some fried potatoes. Incredible! The soup of the udon was rich and creamy and so full of flavor! The fried potatoes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect comfort food!

Hit the spot! - Edit
A hot bowl of udon after cycling around Hiroshima all morning really hit the spot! The staff substitutes a vegetable broth on request, making the dish vegan. They can also make vegan (egg-less) tempura on request. The English menu is available on their website, but not printed out in the restaurant. Upon speaking to the owner at the end of the meal, she suggested they may need to discontinue the vegan broth due to the decreased demand from the coronavirus pandemic. I hope they don’t, as it was absolutely delicious!

Very friendly staff, I showed them a picture of the tofu salad from this app and asked if they could make it. The waitress very kindly went to check and said she could. It was a very big portion. She explained after that due to Corona they’ve had to reduce their menu. So it was very sweet she made it. The Udon smelt amazing when it was brought out and it was very tasty!

The only place where we got udon in Japan during our trip. The restaurant had a very clean and minimalistic style, which I really liked. We tried some vegan dishes which were all very good! We also bought some wooden utensils as a souvenir.

They have a digital English menu and the owner spoke perfect English. When I asked for vegetarian menu she asked me what exactly I can’t eat and if I was vegan or just vegetarian. I had a lunch set which had tofu udon soup and vegetable tempura and a drink! Very delicious and only 1000¥

Fair warning - serves are huge, including the onigiri (one is definitely enough).
The owner is so sweet - she speaks a bit of English and gave us free mochi and green tea after our mains. She also talked about her food and gave me the proper Japanese names for the dishes and ingredients I really liked and was beyond stoked to hear how much we liked the food.
Can't recommend this place more.
