Great Vegan And Gluten Free Options - Edit
My husband and I really love this little place. My husband had the avocado sandwich which he would not stop raving about. I had the poke bowl which I enjoyed too. I appreciate that they have a lot of food from local farms like their own. The sugarcane juice is delicious and a must try. They have a bunch of baked gluten free and vegan goods that they offer. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars, is that they are not completely vegan. There are some dishes with goat cheese. I do highly recommend this place, and I would go back again as this is my second time here on vacation.

Slow service, fresh food - Edit
Our food took nearly an hour to come as they seemed to be loading up a vehicle with catering but no one communicated this to us. No table service. No one was overly friendly or helpful. I ordered a sweet potato salad which got a bit monotonous and would be better as a side rather than a main dish. My husband got a tasty bean burger and fresh salad. I’d order that next time. We got a delicious red fruity smoothie - can remember which one- they have so many! Bought an avocado chocolate mousse from the fridge as well and that hit the spot.

Many diverse vegan and gluten free options - Edit
The entire menu can be made vegan and/or gluten free on request. Their cheese replacement is a house made maca nut spread. The gluten free bread is made in house as well. Many very interesting smoothie options too. Lots of classic Hawaiian ingredients on display on the menu!

A little disappointing - Edit
I was not particularly impressed with this place and considering all the rave reviews, felt all the more disappointing! We both ordered a taro burger with different sides (poi and tabouleh) and weren’t overly impressed. It lacked a lot of flavor and despite the tomato and sprouts, it didn’t taste “fresh”. I tried ordering the labeled vegan baklava and was dismayed when she told us that it had honey in it, I don’t know why it was labeled as vegan if it had honey. I’m glad she told us, but it took away from the experience right at the start. Despite our dislike for the food, the desserts were super good. The brownie, cookie, and banana bread were delicious. I must have come on a bad day— the only thing that will bring me back is the hope that I can join the rave reviews and have a better experience.

Favorite place in Hilo - Edit
The food is fresh, healthy, and delicious. You can ask for a vegan version of pretty much anything. The cane juice is refreshing and so tasty - highly recommend the coconut limeade flavor. They also have a lot of vegan baked goods. My only complaint is that some things are mislabeled, like a “vegan baklava” that has honey in it.

ridiculously delicious tacos - Edit
i’m so happy that we happened to stop by this restaurant on a tuesday because we were able to order the taco tuesday special. we were blown away by how good those tacos tasted. we also got the avocado sandwich, which was really good as well. both items were not originally marked as vegan, but everything can be easily modified by switching out the cheese for a delicious macadamia nut spread.

Great fresh juice and plenty of options - Edit
We stopped here for lunch and had the taco special (only on Tuesday) and some of the best fresh tropical juice I’ve had. The tacos were easily modified to make them vegan and gluten free and had tasty homemade shells. We will definitely be back if we are in the area again; there were tons of other things I’d love to try on their menu.

Wonderful First Experience at this Gem in Hilo - Edit
My partner and I visited this establishment for the first time after ending my first 46 day juice fast! I indulged in the Pitaya bowl and asked for just fruit (not granola or coconut) added. I am currently Raw Vegan and they had wonderful choices and were very accommodating for my strict dietary desires. The Raw Cane Juice was amazing! I am excited to try other dishes and spend more time there. Wonderful setting and fast service even at the lunch hour!

still the best place to eat healthy in East Hawaii - Edit
Hawaii is not poor on vegan choices, a bit harder it is as a raw vegan when you want to eat out. The more grateful I am for the Sweet Cane Cafe as you can have a complete raw vegan meal there. Lots of smoothie choices and various raw vegan deserts. One dish on the main menu is raw, which is the raw nori wrap. Taste is good, but after all this years I wish for some more variety. Can't remember if they ever change their menu? Other then raising prices?

good sandwich - Edit
Overall, this place is nice. I came with my grandma and we got the raw matcha-cacao pie, pesto sandwich, and cassava pizza. The first two were great, but I would not get the pizza again. Definitely really healthy, but my tastes buds weren't up to par lol. The cassava crust was made of shredded cassava instead of something like cassava flour, and it was mixed with turmeric. Bleh.

Original classics - Edit
Everything can be made vegan. The pizza is not your traditional finger food, the crust is a fritter made from cassava, the sauce is pesto, and the vegan cheese is a macadamia nut ricotta. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Split it with a friend, or be prepared to take the rest home. The poke is more like a potato salad, but it was probably my favorite item. The coconut milk limeade is refreshing sand original. Finally, the sweet potato brownie is worth picking up.

Nice burger, GREAT smoothie - Edit
I loved the embrace of local produce. I had a taro burger with a side of poi. Both were good but blown out of the water by our smoothies. The sizes were daunting so we went with medium but having tasted it, I suspect I would have finished a large!

Sweet cane cafe is not just a restaurant, it's an experience. The seating area is spacious, bright and filled with light. They have outdoor seats too and the entire cafe is very well maintained.
Read moreWe had their burger bowl specials with the chickpea and ulu burgers. Both tasted good but lacked texture; too mushy and soft. But the bowls came with a simple salad and house hummus so they were very filling. I got the durian smoothie and my friends did the wellness shots. Both burst with natural and refreshing flavors! I highly recommend the shots to wake up your tired body after a long hike!
I liked their little storefront with very interesting and locally handmade edibles such as cacao, seasonings and fruit leather! They'd make nice gifts to carry back!

Big, healthy portions - Edit
We arrived at Sweet Cane Cafe quite famished after a morning of hiking in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We ordered the chipotle black bean burger, subbing mac-nut spread for cheese, and the raw nori wrap. Both were delicious, filling, and made with super fresh ingredients. We tried a chocolate chip cookie, as well, which was a great treat to end the meal. If we had been in Hilo longer, we would have happily eaten here again!

Great from start to finish - Edit
Drove to Hilo from Kona and was excited about this place because of their fresh sugar cane juice! But they have so much more! They claim to be a “gathering place” and it’s true. Although some dishes have cheese, everything can be made vegan.
Read moreThe sugarcane with limeade was delicious. The Caesar Salad was light and refreshing, even though Caesar salads are usually heavy. The Hungry Farmer was decadent and could feed 2 people. The Raw Nori Wrap was bigger than expected and delicious, but it would be easier to handle if they were smaller. The chipotle black bean burger was spicy-yum! We ordered another salad but I can’t remember the name of it - it had avocado and curried chickpea over a bed of lettuce. I bought a pre-made Ulu Poke bowl from the grab-n-go case. Also delicious.
