Best vegan dishes in DC

St. James has is my go-to spot when I’m craving something satisfying. The aloo and chana pies are a fantastic starter, great textures and a perfect balance of sweet and savory with the pineapple sauce served on the side.

My go-to vegan main is the Vegan Paratha Platter. Be sure to dine with someone or come hungry, because it’s meant to serve two. Even when I split it with my partner, we almost always have leftovers for the next day—and they never last long because it’s that good. All of the curries on the platter are delicious, but the pumpkin curry and potato curry are my personal favorites.

If I’m craving something sweet, I’ll sometimes order the sweet plantains. However, there aren’t any other true vegan desserts on the menu, which is my one gripe.

We’ll also occasionally order the collard greens, which are very good as well. We’ve also enjoyed the cocktails we’ve had here.

The one thing I will warn: this restaurant serves meat and seafood. Sometimes the restaurant can have a strong fish smell if nearby customers have ordered these dishes. Opt for takeout instead if you’re sensitive to smells.

Pros: Spot-on flavors, Intimate atmosphere, Good cocktails

Cons: Serves seafood; fish smell in restaurant sometimes, No true vegan desserts
