Vegan at the Grand Canyon! - Edit

We stayed at the red feather lodge during our Grand Canyon trip and were elated to find that across the street was Sophie's Mexican food with vegetarian options. Even better, we asked if the chimichanga can be made vegan and they did it for us! Vegan options may be slim up here but Sophie's came to the rescue! The guacamole is yummy!

Pros: vegan chimichanga, rice, and beans, sangria, vegan fajitas

Watch for "vegan" friendly ingredients - Edit

So, this review is based solely on their food, the service was excellent. They have what's called TEPA, which is a mix of veggies to make a so-called plant protein. Stay away if you're vegan, the ingredients for this concoction has honey and egg whites! To be honest, it's not a vegan restaurant, so don't expect clean ingredients and/or items to not be made on separate cutting boards. Come here if it's the last choice, buy veggies at a market if you're vegan clean.

Pros: Alcohol

Cons: Zero vegan options, Misleading menus

Restaurant with vegan options - Edit

It is definitely not my preferred restaurant, now the vegan options they propose, should be a must have in all restaurants.

We were happy to find this restaurant in Tusayan.

Pros: Good vegan food on menu, Great initiative

Cons: Limited choice

Wonderfully Filling - Edit

After traveling through the southwest for 5 days with even the vegetables soup based in beef stock we were happy to stumble upon Sophie's. I'm Pesci and my husband is Veggie low dairy. The vegetation protein Tepa was wonderful. Everything was well spiced and filling.

Pros: large portions , veggie protein , great drinks & deserts

Cons: higher cost , not vegan protein

Very Ordinary - Edit

There are several vegetarian options on the menu, with a few able to be made vegan by excluding sour cream & cheese. Vegan items are not labelled, and the Tepa (described as whole food vegetable protein) that is included in several dishes is not vegan as it contains egg & honey. This is not labelled on the menu.

I love Mexican food, but found the food here to be very ordinary. The burrito in particular was sub-par, with a soggy tortilla and bland flavour. The tacos were slightly better, but still pretty average.

Pros: Large portions

Cons: Bland tasting food, Vegan items not labelled, Staff lack knowledge about veganism

Careful when paying the check at Sophies - Edit

We had a recent experience at this restaurant. After having the dinner when we got the check, it seemed a bit off, around $20 more than it should be. When we asked the attendant, he started giving explanation, that its the taxes and stuff without even verifying the bill. After some discussion he understood that he did the calculation wrong and finally corrected that. We were lucky to double the check the bill and got that corrected. Not sure if they do it on a regular basis to sniff a few extra bucks from customers which some might easily ignore.

Vegetarian maybe - Edit

Our service was not so good here. We asked for vegan and also asked specifically about a couple things. Didnt get a very clear response back. When we got our order we still received the sour cream inside, and didnt trust the rest of the food, or what it was cooked on/with. It is rare that I get such a vibe that I dont eat any of the meal after wards. Options are limited for vegans around here and this will not be a stop for us next time.

Pros: Trying to be vegetarian?

Great Vegetarian Options - Edit

This restaurant boasts it's vegetarian selections and proudly says on their sign Sophie's Mexican Kitchen & Vegetarian Restaurant. It is so hard when you're on a road trip to find vegetarian/vegan eats - so we were happy to find this place. Their food was good and they had lots of vegan/veg options. The restaurant was well decorated and their service was good. Plus they had delicious desserts too!
