Buford Highway Izakaya

I had a social dinner with friends at Shoya Izakaya in the Doraville/Buford Highway area. The spot is tucked into a strip mall that is anchored by H-Mart and is a known destination for Asian restaurants.

The restaurant had a great atmosphere and had many various seating styles including traditional floor, long booths, and bar-seating.

Izakaya is a small-plates style method of dining and Shoya Izakaya had many vegetarian/vegan dishes.

I started with a green tea which I had in a larger mug rather than a pot. It was still good, but I prefer when I have a kettle to keep the tea hot.

I ordered a variety of small platers: the spicy cucumber, the king oyster mushroom yakitori, the pumpkin roll, vegetable tempura, and fried eggplant in soy garlic sauce.

The standout dishes were the king oyster mushroom yakitori (in the teriyaki sauce) and the pumpkin roll. Both were extremely tasty. The fried eggplant and spicy cucumber were also very good, but left less of an impact. I was a bit indifferent on the vegetable tempura - but overall a great meal. Unfortunately, they had sold out of sishito peppers. If I go back, I'd love to try those and a tofu dish to get some additional protein - the mushroom tofu was the most interesting.

The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgable of the menu, and was willing to split a check multiple ways. There were a few mix ups and delays with the kitchen, but the izakaya is serve when ready, so there was a steady stream of food.

Pros: Vegetarian Menu, Variety of Small Plates
