The best

I absolutely love Shojin. The food is delicious, creative, and full of flavor. The presentation is beautiful, and the staff are friendly, attentive, and so nice. Great spot to celebrate a special occasion; they go above and beyond to make you feel extra special. The place is always packed so I recommend making reservations in advance. One of my favorite spots!

Unbelievably Delicious

Celebrated my birthday with the amazing omakase menu. Everything was outstanding. As a vegan, I'm thrilled to be able to still enjoy sushi, especially sushi that tastes this good! The ambiance is lovely with the dim lights, music, and artwork. The staff are also incredible and extremely attentive, and go above and beyond to make your experience top notch. This was our first visit, but certainly not the last! Thank you, Shojin, for helping me celebrate my birthday!

One of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had.

Did the set pre fix menu and it was so good. A wide and flavorful gamut of foods. Any regular sushi lover would love this place, with the added bonus of not eating parasite-laden food! Service was EXCEPTIONAL. Can’t wait to take my wife here.

Pros: The food is insane, The service top notch

Meticulous and Delicious

Came here on a Saturday night for dinner with reservations. We sat outside in the beautiful patio area. They have heaters. The inside seating was beautiful as well. They are very attentive and will even hold open the plastic tarp that separates the indoor dining form outside patio. I think they ask all diners if they’re vegan, so don’t be surprised. They ask very nicely not in a judgmental way.

We opted for a la carte rather than tasting menu. The eggplant Wagyu nigiri was amazing! Seared at table side. The baked scallop roll was my favorite. Also seared table side. The cutlet roll (I don’t remember the name of this one) was alright. Not my favorite. We also shared the non spicy ramen with a vegan egg. We had to take a to go box at this point. The noodles weren’t the typical chewy ramen noodles which was the only downside. Then we had the matcha cheesecake for dessert. More like mousse I think.

Overall I would definitely come back here. Might even do the tasting menu next time!

Came here a second time in winter. They didn’t have the eggplant Wagyu anymore nor do they flambé your rolls tableside anymore. Apparently some people complained about the gas. The flavor wasn’t as good this time for the baked scallop roll. The dragon roll seemed more like salmon skin than eel roll. The rock shrimp mushrooms were our favorite. Mushroom tempura was light and mild. Taste of gion was mild, miso cookie was the highlight.

Not sure I’ll be coming back anymore, seems like first time was the best.

Nice sushi, mediocre ramen, but great dessert

Visited back in 2017. If I really liked it, I’d have given it 5 stars then. Something must be missing, can’t recall whaat.

Visited again in 2022 Dec.

Tried their “best” spicy ramen, matcha tea and the Gion dessert.

Their ramen does not seem to be the traditional Japanese style. It’s more like Japan-western fusion, I appreciate the attempt to make look-alike egg vegan, but it tastes nothing like an egg. I also like kale by itself, but in the ramen? Not so much. Broth is okish. They can do better. I won’t recommend this ramen.

The dessert however hits the right spot. Subtle compared with western counterparts, but has its unique mixture with matcha(chocolate) and sesame(ice cream) that makes me craving for more.

Very good tasting menu

I have heard about this place for many years at there arts district location but I since I’m closer to the Culver City location I had to finally try! We were not disappointed, we each got the 20 course tasting menu and it really hit the spot and let us try a multitude of different items we normally may not have ordered. I recommend making a reservation as they book up quickly and any of the sushi rolls are a must try for sure.

Pros: All vegan and gluten free menu , Excellent tasting menu , Lovely staff

Cons: A touch expensive , Make a reservation

Maybe I should've tried the tasting menu

The service here is great, the atmosphere is nice, and you can dress up (the servers were in suits and dresses) or down. We sat on the outdoor patio and enjoyed the evening breeze. It's always nice knowing everything on the menu is vegan, and the food was good, just maybe not my personal favorite sushi or ramen flavor combinations.

The biggest downside here is the parking situation. All on-street, and you're likely to end up parked in a residential area.

Pros: Fantastic service, Nice atmosphere and patio

Cons: Hard to find parking

Get the Tasting Menu

Every time we go here we get the tasting menu ($50/person, items change all the time). It’s such a good deal & the perfect amount of food! The flavors are fantastic and everything feels very healthy and light. Sushi here is good but my favorites were all the non-sushi dishes. The staff here is the friendliest, they make you feel very welcome. Outdoor seating & heating lamps. Decent amount of metered street parking depending on the day.

Heaven

This is my church. The dynamite roll is one of my top five foods on planet earth. It’s perfection. Everything is great, but I’d focus on the sushi.

Pros: Incredible quality, Dynamite roll is like meeting god

Cons: It’s not cheap but it’s worth it

Awesome vegan Japanese food

Delicious and inventive. They have a fixed price taste menu as well as a la carte. A great combination of ingredients to recreate traditional Japanese flavors.

Indoor space and an outdoor garden. Very cozy and romantic.

Really disappointing

I’ve eaten here a few times over the years but not since Covid. I had a friend in town for the weekend and from reviews she picked this as the place she most wanted to eat.

We got 4 things, and none off them had much flavor or were anything special. The California roll for $20 had no taste and was tiny. We asked for tamari and ginger to add some flavor and were told they don’t have ginger(?!) and that it was already flavored so we shouldn’t need tamari but she would bring us some, though we were already almost done by that time.

Presentation-wise, everything looked beautiful and the ambiance is nice (even in the location that feels like a weird spot for it) but for how expensive it is, we spent $80 (no drinks) and were still hungry. Since we didn’t love anything we ordered and didn’t want to throw good money after bad, we left.

Hopefully they were just having an off night, but while I love supporting vegan businesses, in the future I would just go to a local sushi place and leave full, with extra money to donate to a great vegan cause.

Distinguished

I have dined at the Culver City Shojin location since it first opened and each and every meal since then has always been delicious, flavorful and memorable. The staff are always very friendly, respectful and accommodating and the ambiance is set with an excellent choice of top Jazz selections and candlelit tables that create a pleasant, warm and inviting atmosphere. You can always depend on having a delicious fulfilling meal with a menu full of creativity and culinarily delights!

Not your Traditional Sushi Restaurant

Everything tastes so fresh and unique. I’ve been to other vegan sushi places and Shojin is by far the most unique. The flavors of the rolls are so different from any sushi I’ve ever had before (vegan or not). Definitely stop by here for a delicious and unique take on sushi.

Pros: Wonderful and friendly staff, Delicious food

Cons: Expensive

Shojin

I liked Shojin when I ate there in 2019 but not enough to go running back. The ambiance was really nice and the staff was friendly. My friends and I ordered a number of things, but the thing I was most excited about trying was the truffle ramen with a vegan egg...it turned out to be OK. The vegan egg was very sticky and didn't taste very good (much different than a positive experience I had the day before at another vegan ramen place). We ordered a number of sushi rolls too. The roll they light on fire was really neat. I didn't really like the roll with broccoli, but the cauliflower roll was good.

Amazing Unique Experience

We ordered the valentines day special, and everything was so good! There were like 7 courses, and every single one blew my mind (loved the dynamite & baked California roll, all appetizers were amazing too). They also added a nice package that had rose petals & some candles. All neatly packaged with instructions, an overall great experience that made our quarantine valentines day very special. Would highly recommend this place!

Pros: Delicious amazing food, Unique vegan food that's hard to find elsewhere

Cons: Pricey, but worth it

Some Incredible Items

The baked hand crab roll is one of my top favorite dishes in LA. The Dynamite Roll is really amazing as well and the Ramen is delicious. But there are some weird things. The restaurant is way too expensive. You can easily spend a hundred bucks on food for yourself. Some of the items, the Scallop Rolls and the new Baked California Roll are torched at the table. It is done with a propane torch. I don't know anyone would want propane blown on to their food? The worst thing about the restaurant is the rules. You can't sit until your entire party is there. You can't alter menu items. That is all very out of touch with great customer service. But some of the menu items are amazing.

Pros: Baked Crab Cake Hand Roll is amazing, Dynamite Roll is fantastic, but very spicy

Cons: Rules and regulations , Propane torching of food , Way
