I go here whenever in Akakura

Shibata has gradually become my favourite restaurant in Akakura Onsen for vegan options (although there are other fantastic options). They do have a separate vegan menu this season now that tourism is back. I had agedashi tofu and temupra udon and they were excellent. Definitely book ahead during peak times, although we got lucky we saw many turned away at about 6 -7 pm on Saturday night.

Pros: Vegan menu if you ask, Really tasty food, Lovely although busy staff

Cons: Popular during peak times

No Menu - But Great Food!

We ate here last night and were treated to some truly delicious vegan dishes! However, the restaurant no longer seems to have a dedicated vegan menu. The host understood our dietary requirements and was able to modify dishes for us to include salted edamame, fried tofu, miso udon, and red bean soup which were all EXCELLENT, but I was sad to see that the menu had been removed. No doubt another casualty of the pandemic.

Pros: Knowledgeable and accommodating staff., Really yummy food!

Cons: No labeled vegan options.

Great agedashi tofu!

We loved the deliciously crispy agedashi tofu and flavoursome vegan curry and enjoyed the mizuna and soba salad too. Food was served very quickly after we ordered. I would gladly eat here again.

Room for improvement

The gyoza and crispy chicken were nice, the daikon salad was good but the crispy Tofu was horrible. It was cold and tasted like stale bread. We only ate a few pieces. The Aussie waiter served my drink by holding it by the top of the glass!
Overall, the staff were friendly enough.

Pros: Crispy Chicken, Gyoza, Friendly staff

Cons: Crispy Tofu, Served my drink by touching the top, Beer not filled to the top

Friendly staff, delicious food

Well worth visiting when in town. Turn to the back of the menu to see the separate vegan/vegetarian menu - but do check through the full menu as some veg-friendly side dishes, like French fries, are in the full menu. I highly recommend trying something with rice as they use a delicious locally grown rice.

Pros: Clear menu in English, Warm atmosphere , Friendly staff

Cons: Can be busy so you may have to book

Great vegan menu- rare in Japan

Traditional Japanese restaurants tend to be full of meat these days. Shibata has a full vegan menu if you ask for it, and will veganise dishes off the main menu (replace dashi with vegetable stock for example). I’ve eaten there 3x so far along with family members who are not vegan. I’ve had daikon radish salad, fried tofu, udon noodle soup with tempura vegetables, other family members have had bean curry with rice (it’s vegan) - and there are lots of vegan dishes I haven’t tried yet. Not much English spoken, but the manager understand “vegetarian” and “no meat” - and how to alter any menu items to be vegan. Book early as it gets full up each night.

Pros: Understand how to make s meal vegan. , Inexpensive , Close to everything

Cons: Popular- book early. , Japanese wait staff sometimes misunderstand orders
