Keep Palm And Carry On - Edit
Due to this being a carnival-themed brunch, I was expecting something of a culinary party, and while the opening act was somewhat underwhelming, the performance eventually gathered considerable momentum.
Read moreMy initial impression was one of woe. For such an enormous spread, the range of vegan options was surprisingly meagre. What was available was exemplary in terms of quality - even the simplest of offerings like the hummus & muhammara were considerably better than they had any right to be - which only made the fact that I couldn’t enjoy more of it all the more bittersweet. There was clearly potential here, but I suspected I was only seeing a fraction of it.
Putting on my best puppy-dog eyes, I approached the head chef in a desperate attempt to curry their favour & see if they could produce some additional items. Not only did this wonderful person, who turned out to be as amiable and gracious as you like, offer to source a multitude of dishes, but they also explained that the powers that be had been somewhat overzealous with the allergen labelling. A number of items had been marked as unsuitable because they merely may contain certain ingredients due to processing. A noble endeavour, certainly, but somewhat misleading when it came to what was actually available.
Once we had done the rounds, clarified what was suitable and effectively unlocked the buffet’s full potential, the shackles were truly off. I threw myself into the newly discovered bounty with considerably more enthusiasm than dignity. The spring rolls and dumplings were particularly good, & so enjoyable that I became entirely distracted from the fact that additional dishes were being prepared for me behind the scenes. By the time they arrived, I was already more than content.
The burger was one of the real highlights - easily among the best I’ve had in a long time. The pizza was similarly crafted with care, while the Chinese tofu & spring onion was the kind of dish that could have held its own against anything I’ve had from a takeaway in the city.
What began as a rather faltering affair ultimately developed into something considerably more impressive. I would have been happy to recommend the place based solely on the strength of those initial dishes, but the staff’s willingness to clarify the allergen situation & produce additional options transformed the experience entirely. It may have taken a little work, but once the door was open, there was plenty of brilliance waiting on the other side.
