Omni Marks, Get Set, Go! - Edit
Normally, when I attend a breakfast buffet, I am alone at the start of service, quietly surveying the landscape before making my first assault on the offerings. Here, however, I was one of a number of eager patrons chomping at the bit from the moment the doors opened. It was absolute carnage for 7AM - predominantly South Africans and Chinese tourists - and I have to say, they were my kind of people!
Read moreGiven the available spread, I could understand exactly why they were so keen to get stuck in. This isn’t to say there was anything particularly groundbreaking on offer, but what was available was executed with such care and consistency that it didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes reliability, when done properly, is more than enough.
An early highlight were the hash browns. Their rather anaemic appearance did little to suggest what lay beneath; a beautifully crisp exterior giving way to a fluffy, almost cloud-like interior. A classic case of not judging a book by its cover.
Another boon was the cereal selection which held an impressive range of options. Whenever Schär fruit muesli makes an appearance at a buffet, I know I’m in for a good start, and this was no exception.
The vegetable sausages were prepared perfectly, the beans and mushrooms delivered exactly what they needed to, and the porridge was thick, creamy and wonderfully unctuous. Nothing flashy, just excellent execution of breakfast staples.
As good as all these items were, none of these were the highlight of my visit. This honour, somewhat surprisingly, went to the sourdough. An unlikely hero, perhaps, but the depth of flavour was exceptional and it produced some genuinely magical toast. Yes, really - toast.
Great food, fantastic service and beautiful surroundings combined to make this a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Throw in the wonderful value for money, and this earns a very solid recommendation from me.
